PRE-SEASON SPECIAL - JIGGY PREVIEWS THE 2006-2007 NFL NFC SEASON

Jiggination Sensation

Wow.

That is all I can say, Wow.

It is so wonderful to turn on the TV and see NFL football. I used to have to watch classic games, or draft specials or the wholly underrated , “Battle of the Gridiron Stars,’ but now I have football. What is noteworthy is that the Battle of the NFL Cheerleaders’ has somehow avoided the clutches of my Tivo and for that I am very disappointed.

So this week, I sampled the Niners v Bears, I picked at the Saints and the Titans and the Bengals and Skins are rotting my brain as we speak. Let me share my insights with you.

First, let me set the scene. For the Niner game, I have a ritual. I know it is preseason for them, but it is for me too. You play like you practice, just like the Niners need to work on their formations, special teams, reads… I have to work on my ritual. First, the garb; Niners visor, Niners socks, Jeans, Jenna Jameson brand men’s underwear (I actually wear them everyday, not just on game days) and a Wagercom T-shirt. Then dim all the lights. Then put on some B-Lloyd music – sure, he is a redskin now, but if he hasn’t changed his website (www.blloyd.com) then I am sure he hasn’t changed his heart either. Then power up the HUGE hi-def TV and turn up the volume loud. I want to feel like I am there (only with cheaper beer and easier access to lubricant – you know for those especially rare, but beautiful Niner touchdowns.)

In truth I was prepared for a demoralizing three hours. We all remember how awfully inept the Niners were last year and now their first team (last in the league last year in offense and defense) would have to play against the number one defense of last year in the Bears. Or in other words, I had tissues out for both the good and the bad.

And then the game started.

Frank GoreI am 89% convinced that Alex Smith was abducted by aliens and now there is some little mutant in an Alex Smith costume running the show. Think Alf, but in a really great Halloween get-up. He looked decisive, he looked sharp and he looked like a leader. None of those qualities were present last season. It was amazing. Frank Gore made you forget all about the dark days of Kevan Barlow. Antonio Bryant had some TOesque moves and played brilliantly. The Niners are officially back. (Or at least they weren’t embarrassing during their first preseason game.) It is like those times in high school when you had been on a REAL cold streak with the ladies. And finally that homely girl with braces and no chest agrees to go with you to the movies. During the previews, you casually snake your sweaty, pimply hand in to hers and she doesn’t recoil. That is the level of victory that the Niners should feel – there is no guarantee that things are going to continue, but for a brief second, things feel pretty good.

The Saints game was eye opening. Reggie Bush is actually for real. He didn’t look small or fragile. He did get upended by a cornerback (Pac Man) but hey Pac Man is a tough guy. Vince Young has a long way to go. I am going to go one record right now as saying that Vince Young is going to be a bust. He has many athletic gifts, but in the end qbs make their money and prove their worth by making quick, accurate decisions and I am not convinced he can make them. He got a 7 the first time he took the Wonderlic test. I think you get 8 points for signing your name.

And the Washington game is only interesting because Clinton Portis got dinged up. I am afraid I agree with Clinton, there are too many preseason games. I also agree with him that football players should go back to smoking cigarettes. With the average life expectancy of an NFL player at 55 years, they can look cool and die before they have time to develop black lung.

NFC Preview

East

The New York Football Giants. This team remains largely intact and can improve on their stellar year last year. Though I dislike the Manning Family and especially dislike Eli. (How arrogant do you have to be to tell the Chargers that you won’t play for them? Hey Eli, since you have been drafted (2004) the Giants have won a mighty 17 games in two years – not bad. The Bolts have won 21. So nyah, nyah, nyah.) Tiki Barber is pretty good and Eli seems to like connecting with Plex Burress. The Defense also returns relatively strong. I would imagine, though I feel dirty saying it, that the G-men will likely have a pretty good season again this year.

Washington. They are really rolling out Mark Brunell at qb. I think Brunell was on my fantasy team in junior high. That is a severely long time ago. Washington has some big plays guys in Santana Moss and rapper to the stars, Blloyd. I have no real feelings on the men from the nations capital except to say that Brunell isn’t the answer and their defense need to step up this year.

T.O.Dallas. Who doesn’t love TO in the discovery team biking Jersey? And I can’t get enough of the tour of Oxnard jokes. But seriously folks, Dallas is going to surprise people this year and dominate. Bill Parcells is too smart and too good a coach not to take the talent they have and make it all work. I expect them to win the division this year. Let me rattle off the players. TO, Bledsoe, Julius Jones, The Barber of Dallas, Demarcus Ware, Bobby Carpenter… I could go on. In short, it is the year of the Tuna.

Philly. No way guys. Donovan will be exposed this year, Westbrook will be injured and their defense just needs help. No love in Philly.

North

Kyle OrtonChicago. Although we all really love the hijinx of Kyle Orton – doesn’t he seem like that guy who won the lottery to appear in a pro football game and then somehow didn’t lose? Anyway, the Bears defense is unconscious they are so good and they are returning virtually all of their players. They gave up less than 13 points per game last year. That is incredible. If only they had an offense… They need to end the Rex Grossman experiment and go with Griese. I don’t like Griese any more than you do, but he’s more efficient and more controlled than Rex. Pair Brian with Thomas Jones/Cedric Benson, Mushin Muhammed, that all universe Defense and Lovie Smith and you have a contender. They could win this division only playing their defense. I love the Bears this year.

Minnesota. The only thing I have to say about Minnesota is that I think Tavaris Jackson could make a great NFL qb. Oh, and Fred, if you’re reading this, get me an invite to the next boat cruise. (if you must ask, the Vikes need to improve at running back and at wideout – they still haven’t replaced Randy Moss – maybe they could have their players wear Randy Moss masks while they practice, it is just a thought. And the defense is improving. I am hopeful for this squad but they need a few more parts for the puzzle to be complete.)

Detroit. At least they finally got rid of Joey Harrington, but they forgot to get rid of the real problem, Matt Millen. Kitna can ball, Kevin Jones has got some skills, their receiving corps is top notch and their defense is ridiculous (as in bad – not good). But don’t fret Lions fans, at least you have the easy going, much loved Mike Martz to help run your offense. At least we know the coaching staff will all get along. It will be exciting to watch the wheels fall off of this wagon again.

Green Bay. For the love of everything unholy, Brett Favre, PLEASE RETIRE. You are no longer helping the squad. You know all those athletes that they talk about that hold on too long? You are one of those athletes. Time to hang them up Brett. Help Aaron along and enjoy your money, fame and family life. Yip Cabbage.

South

DahmerTampa Bay. I am a big fan of Chucky (Jon Gruden). Cadillac is one of the exciting young players that has to assume a franchise player sort of mantle and I think he can do it. Joey Galloway and Mark Clayton make for a great pair of receivers (though they might make a better sitcom, so NBC call me, we can work out the details) and the Gruden always has his defense humming. But here is the problem. Let me read you their depth chart at qb, and I am not making this up. Chris Simms, Luke McCown and Tim Rattay. If bad quarterbacks were murderers, this would be Charles Manson, Ricahrd Ramirez and Jeffrey Dahmer. What a trainwreck. I think these impediments will make it impossible for them to make it to the superbowl (unless they go out and get a new qb or if young Bruce Gradkowski can grow up real fast). But that being said, they are going to be a great team and should probably challenge to make the playoffs.

Carolina. The gutty Panthers are fun to watch. They are also pretty good. They will look a lot like last year except for the addition of shy, diminutive, Keyshawn Johnson. Key will add a real second option for Jake Delhomme for a week or two and then his verbal diarrhea will poison the locker room and make for TO comparisons. But I do like the Deangelo Williams draft pick and think the defense in Carolina is a thing of beauty. If Keyshawn doesn’t manage to mangle the team chemistry, look for them to have another good season.

Atlanta. Mike Vick needs to go for this team to get to the next level. It is all about him and he just isn’t that good.

Mardi GrasNew Orleans. Sit down. I think New Orleans will make the playoffs this year. They have an emotional lift because the whole world will want them to conquer the Katrina thing. They have the electric and shockingly effective Reggie Bush. They have Drew Brees who doesn’t seem to feel any of the ill effects of his shoulder injury (and also he was winging it and making great decisions in the few minutes I watched him). They have Joe ‘phone home’ Horn (a legit threat to win the receiving crown this year). And they have a city that celebrates nudity, public drunkenness and threesomes. I love the Aints this year. I don’t know how it happened (actually I do, once you get rid of Aaron Brooks, good things start happening) but the Saints should be able to compete this season. You read it here first.

West

Seattle. They have an easy division and they have a dominant running game, relatively good coach and a great team. I think they are extremely boring to watch, but they are likely going to perform well again this year.

St. Louis. Who cares? They will underperform.

Fitzgerald and BoldinArizona. What do you get when you take a pro bowl running back (Edgerrin James), an MVP, Super Bowl winning qb (Kurt Warner) two lights receivers (Boldin and Fitzerald), a relatively new coach (Denny Green) and new hope in Arizona? You still get the Cardinals. Ha Ha ha. They are everyone’s surprise team this year. Here is a surprise, they’ll finish last in the division.

Sam Clam’s Disco. I already talked about the 9ers above. The short synopsis is this. Their offense has been rejuvenated and their defense needs to get tougher. It is going to be a tough year for the Niners, but look for them to outperform expectations. I think they will finish better than 500 this year and likely better than the Cardinals.
