1/15/04 Week 11 NBA Picks

AC's outlook on the NBA is an entertaining original column featured here at Wagercom. If you are prone to NBA betting or even just an NBA fan, make sure you come back often to read his articles and free NBA Basketball picks against the spread. AC will be providing us with a weekly outlook during the basketball season including free NBA Basketball picks on some of the weekend games each Friday and Saturday.

Our NBA expert AC wrapped up the 2003-2004 NBA betting season with a 51% winning percentage against the spread on his basketball picks after 190 games and has greatly improved that to a 56% winning percentage against the spread so far this season.

We are only two weeks into the new year and what a year it has already been. Baseball has revamped its steroid policy, we are about to land a space craft on Mars (http://www.cnn.com/2005/TECH/space/01/13/huygens.titan/index.html), and the Wagercom.com staff and production company (minus your boy AC who had prior commitments) was in Vegas working the AVN award show and hanging out with the great Janine Lindemulder (The Babe Ruth, Larry Bird, and Michael Jordan of porn).

It has been a great two weeks but the biggest news of all may have been the non-news story of Randy “smoke ‘em if you got ‘em” Moss leaving the final game of the season early and then following it up by mooning a drunken Lambeau Field the last week.

I know this is an NBA column so I will keep it short, but the greatest moment of my life other than the birth of my kids (ok, I don’t have any kids but that’s not the point) was when Michael Irvin called out Randy Moss on ESPN. That’s right, Michael Irvin who was arrested in a hotel room with a bunch of hookers for possession of crack cocaine and showed up to court wearing a fur coat got on Randy’s case for being classless and unprofessional. I’m no genius, but how much of a moron do you have to be to have Michael Irvin reprimand you? Seriously, it’s like Michael Jackson calling you a pedophile, Doug Christie calling you whipped, Ray Romano calling you not funny, or Kobe Bryant calling you an adulterer (oh wait, he did that to Karl Malone, brilliant).

The word on the street is that Randy has something bigger and better planned for this weekend’s game in Philadelphia (which I will be attending and vociferously rooting for whomever Jiggy tells me to bet on). Anyway, I have been told by a reliable source that if Randy scores a touchdown this week he will pull a dumpster out from behind the end zone and go Filthy Ronald on Donovan McNabb in front of an awed and disbelieving Eagles crowd. Oh the shrieks of Joe “I am such a loser and cry baby” Buck will be so worth it.

Ok, enough of Randy and back to the NBA. It’s been a quiet week except for the Magic trading Cutino Mobley and Michael Bradley to the Kings for Mrs. Doug Christie, Doug Christie, and next year’s fall collection from the Doug Christie purse line. This trade is great in that it will have no effect on anything. It’s like trading gonorrhea for crabs, on the bright side, your dick doesn’t hurt anymore but on the downside you’ve got pubic lice laying eggs on your nads. Either way, you won’t be boning chicks for awhile so there really are no winners here.

The Kings get rid of a marginal 2 guard/small forward and receive a marginal 2 guard in return. Awesome, really, that is what will get them over the hump. I mean, it’s not that Rick Adelman is a terrible coach or Chris Webber has no heart or Peja Stojakovic folds in big games, it’s that they need to get a different marginal 2 guard to win the championship. Maybe next Geoff Petrie can trade Darius Songaila for Ira Newble.

As for the Magic, they managed to alienate their best player (Steve Francis) and not improve one bit. Christie may play defense but he is older than Mobley and frankly, just not very good. They also lost Mike Bradley, another one in a long line of terrible tall American born white player first round draft pick busts. Why do teams still waste their picks like this? Who thought Bradley was going to be good? It’s like betting into an ace high flush, sure maybe the other guy might not have it, but why take the risk when 99% of time you’re going to lose? I don’t know but I can’t figure out why I am not running an NBA team, just imagine the cheerleaders we would have.

On to Friday's Free NBA Picks:

Terrible weekend last weekend thanks to the Suns and Clippers combining for 30 points in the fourth quarter and the Timberwolves playing like a bunch of six year olds (that is six year olds with diarrhea)

Toronto +5 at Philadelphia:

The Raptors are actually playing well and the Sixers are the Sixers. That said, I believe I am 0-497 betting against the Sixers but that streak can’t last, can it?

Phoenix -6 at Indiana:

I am taking Phoenix until they lose, seriously. Plus Indiana just does not have the fire power. O’Neal will be tired after running the floor for one quarter at the pace the Suns play, plus Amare will eat him up.

Washington +1.5 at Milwaukee:

I am on the Larry Hughes bandwagon and the Bucks just don’t have it this year. Plus Brendan Haywood is manning the paint for my first place fantasy hoops team so look for him to have a monster game after the pep talk I gave him.

Orlando at Detroit -6.5:

When in doubt take the World Champions at home, simple enough.

On to Saturday Night’s Picks:

2-2 last night thanks to the Raptors managing to lose by 10 after being tied after 3 quarters to the Sixers (which now makes me 0-498 betting against the Sixers this year) and the Suns finally playing a bad game. On the bright side, the Wizards and my boy Larry Hughes came to play as well as the defending champ Detroit Pistons.

Phoenix -1 at Washington:

I am going back to the well here and here’s why. First of all, Quentin Richardson is not going to go 0-11 again, just not possible. Second of all, the Wizards play no defense, I have watched a bunch of their games and it is atrocious. The Suns lost last night because Indiana played some great transition D, this is not happening tonight in Washington, no way. There is a better chance of a Punky Brewster comeback than that. Finally, If Nash is not hurt and can play, this is a blow out. He only played 11 minutes last night due to a bruised thigh. Without him, it will be close, with him not even a contest. Take the Suns and hope Nash is healthy.

San Antonio at Houston +6:

Yes, I initially selected the Spurs in this game but I think the Rockets match up pretty well with the San Antonio. If Yao can bother Duncan enough maybe the Spurs won’t realize Bobby Sura will be guarding Tony Parker. If McGrady can do anything with Bowen on him, the Rockets should keep it close.

New Jersey at Dallas –10.5:

The Nets suck, no really, they are not very good especially without out stonehands Dicky Jefferson. Dirk is going to throw down and even Stackhouse will break 20.

Orlando at Indiana Under 197.5:

Both teams played tough games last night so are likely to be tired. That either leads to no defense or poor shooting. I am going with the poor shooting here. Even though the Magic have nobody to stop O’Neal, he can’t score 198 all by himself.
