NBA PLAYOFFS COLUMN & FREE PICKS:
The second round is just about aligned, with only the Lakers/Suns series being undecided. As always, here is a break down of the upcoming matches along with predictions.
Cleveland vs Detroit: Detroit in 5
I give the Cavs credit for barely beating a mediocre Wizards team. Just when I thought Arenas had made the leap to bonafied superstar by draining a game tying 3 pointer from about 10 feet behind the line, he went and bricked two crucial free throws. Unlike the Wizards, the Pistons will likely play defense and rebound. You know how everyone is saying Jared Jeffries played so well and his stock is rising? Well he did that because the Cavs, excluding LeDong, are softer than Taylor Rain’s supple buttocks. Imagine what the Wallaces are going to do if Jeffires was able to dominate defensively. LeDong is definitely a player, as noted by the refs letting him take more than 2 steps on his game winning lay-up in game 3, and by his incredible pass down low from the top of the key in that same game (the best pass I have seen since the Bird era). However, this is not LeDong’s year as his supporting cast has not done much of anything other than sit around and watch. Sorry Cleveland, but this is not your time, oh yeah, also sorry you have to live in Cleveland.
New Jersey vs Miami: Miami in 6
Things Miami does well: Play defense, play offense, play in transition, rebound, shoot, argue with each other.
Things New Jersey does well: Flop to draw fouls, miss shots, play one on one basketball, beat their wives (ok, that’s only Jason Kidd but still).
In other words, this is not going to be good for the Nets. Wade is going to take over at some point and I believe Shaq shits better players than Jason Collins. I wish the NBA would just skip this series and move on to the Miami-Detroit showdown.
Dallas vs. San Antonio: Dallas in 6
The good news for the Spurs is that they escaped the Kings in only 6 games. The bad news is a well rested Dallas team is waiting for them. You all know AC has picked the Mavs to win it all and this will be their first test. With a big frontcourt able to rebound and give fouls, the Mavs should be able to neutralize Duncan to some degree and thus let Howard, Terry, and Daniels pressure Tony Parker into turning the ball over. The Spurs also have no answer for Dirk, who is determined to finally win something other than a Shaggy from Scooby Doo look-a-like contest. This is the Mavs year and we’re all just around for the ride.
Phoenix/LA Lakers vs Clippers: TBD
This is a tough match-up to call, mainly because it hasn’t been decided yet. The Clippers have way too many weapons for the Lakers, should the Lakers beat Phoenix, yet they may not be able to hang around with the Suns, should Phoenix advance. In any event, it is good to see Kobe’s influence is rubbing off on this young Lakers team (and yes I love the “Kwame Brown Probed” headline. I wonder if it was an anal probe, which is how Kobe likes to do it).
So without further ado, on to this weeks picks:
NBA PLAYOFF FREE PICKS FOR FRIDAY:
Cleveland at Washington Under 195.5:
Elimination games tend to be low scoring affairs and the Wiz’s season is on the line. 5 points is also a lot for the Wiz to be giving so you might want to tease this one with Cleveland and the points but Arenas may come out possessed. Take the under and hope LeDong slows down the pace.
San Antonio -2 at Sacramento:
It pains me to do this in ways you just don’t know. I actually think the Kings are just as good as the Spurs but can’t bet on a Rick Adelman coached team in an elimination game. The smarter bet would be the over, but why be smart?
Saturday's NBA Playoff Picks
LA Lakers +6 at Phoenix:
First of all, I hate the Lakers, and not just because Kobe is a rapist, but because he is an arrogant rapist. That said, Phil Jackson has had them playing unbelievably well against the Suns, mainly by focusing on keeping Marion out of the game. I think there is only a 55% chance Phoenix will win this game which means giving 6 points is probably 4 too many. Take the Lakers and hope Kobe treats Raja Bell like an underaged Colorado hotel worker.
