NBA PLAYOFFS COLUMN & FREE PICKS:
It has been a great NBA playoffs so far. We’ve had excitement, we’ve had scoring, and we’ve even had a Walter McCarty sighting. Other than Miami’s domination of the Nets, which your boy AC called, we have been rewarded with three fantastic series, none better than the Mavs and the Spurs. The best part of the playoffs though, other than listening to Charles Barkley butcher the English language on TNT, has been the emergence and play of several young players. In fact, the young players have been able to sway each series for their teams, so it’s time to give them some props and list the top young performers in the playoffs so far.
Leandro Barbosa: The boy from Brazil sparked the Suns to win 3 straight games in defeating the Rapers, I mean the Lakers. Barbosa did it with speed, speed and more speed. He has now become the best Brazilian import since Gisele and more famous in the US than KaKa (the brazillian soccer player, not the doo doo). Once thought to be the Sun’s PG of the future, Barbosa has morphed into a combo guard whose scoring and energy bring more to the floor than his ability to pass or his court vision. If he continues his focus like this in the upcoming years, he could be a consistent 20 point per game scorer. What some people don’t remember is that he was the Sun’s leading scorer over the first few weeks of the year before he got injured. Keep an eye on Leandro, the KaKa of basketball.
Devin Harris: The Devin Harris story has been told for games now. Inserted into the starting line-up against the Spurs, Harris has been every bit the spark plug for the Mavs as Barbosa has been for the Suns. He is quicker than me should I ever wind up in bed with Taylor Rain and faster than Barry Bonds tracking down HGH. He changes the game when he is in it, something your boy AC predicted when Harris was drafted http://www.wagercom.com/nba_draft_2004.html .
Josh Howard/Marques Daniels: It is not clear that I can really tell these guys apart but I do know they can flat out play. We are seeing a shift from specialized role players to players who can do it all. Howard and Daniels can shoot, pass, rebound, play defense, and bang groupies with the best of them. With defensive specialists like Adrian Griffin starting to go the way of the dinosaurs, or pubic hair in porn, we are all better off, especially when they are being replaced by guys like Howard and Daniels (defensive specialists that is, not pubic hair in porn, I think we would all be worse off if pubic hair in porn were to be replaced by Howard or Daniels, but that is just me).
Raja Bell: Ok, Raja is technically not that young of a player, but he has stepped up his game not just in the playoffs, but all year. By shooting the lights out from 3 and playing in your face defense, Raja has allowed the Suns system to continue to pump out wins. This guy just deserves props all around, especially for standing up to Kobe in the Lakers series.
Udonis Haslem: An old AC favorite, mainly due to his name being an anagram for “Demolish Anus,” has been the quiet yet steady force on the Heat team. Haslem often comes down with the key rebound or lay-up. He is the workman on a team of stars. On a less established team, he would be averaging a double-double, but with the Shaq and Alonzo clogging the lane, his rebound opportunities are limited, like trying to get a slice of pie around Tawny Kittaen and Shawn Kemp.
The Northwestern Girls Soccer team: Ok, this has nothing to do with the NBA, but I gotta give my girls some props http://badjocks.com/archive/2006/northwestern-womens-soccer-hazing.htm . Not since your boy AC was at NU has such debauchery happened, and for that we are all a little bit sad inside.
So without further ado, on to this weeks picks:
NBA PLAYOFF FREE PICKS FOR FRIDAY:
Detroit at Cleveland +5.5:
Let me get this straight. The Cavs just beat Detroit three games in a row, the Pistons have looked confused and without motivation, and now Detroit is favored by 5 in Cleveland? I don’t think so. They may win but LeDong is not going to be blown out. This Pistons team is sorely overrated. Like I have been saying all year; they are good, but not great. They may beat the Cavs two in a row, but they are not making it past Miami and they are not taking this game by more than 5. Just hope one player on the Cavs other than LeDong can hit some shots.
San Antonio at Dallas -1.5:
This is a tough tough game to call, especially with Jason Terry being suspended for hitting Michael Finley with his purse. Seriously, I haven’t seen a punch that weak since Screech beat Horshack in celebrity boxing . The NBA should be ashamed of itself for suspending Terry much in the same way Dirk should be ashamed of himself for admitting to listening to David Hasselhoff’s music. I am a bit worried about the Mavs without Terry. His clutch three point shooting is huge for them. I am a fan of Harris, Daniels, and Howard, but they need Terry’s veteran presence. If I didn’t think the Mavs were going to blow the Spurs out from the opening tip, I’d be more worried about Terry being out, but I don’t see this game being close. Take the Mavs and hope they run the Spurs out of the building and back to their dreary existences in San Antonio.
