AC'S NBA FREE PICKS WEEK 5:
We’re about one fifth of the way into the season and nobody has really distanced themselves from the pack. The Mavs are hot with 12 wins in a row, the Suns have put together 6 straight wins, the Jazz have the best record in the West (for now, you might want to short them if you can), and Zach Randolph has not been sued or arrested in over a week. So basically, not a lot going on this week in the league.
However, it is around this time of the year that AC starts getting calls from league GMs asking “AC, can you help me figure out what is wrong with my team?” “AC should I make a big trade?” “AC, how do I best negotiate at the World Famous Mitchell Brothers O’Farrell Theatre?” To which AC usually responds “a lot, maybe, and have a deal worked out before you go into the room.”
With all of that said, I thought I’d do some charity work today by offering three suggestions for each of the three worst teams in each conference.
Eastern Conference
Milwaukee Bucks:
1. You might want to think about playing some defense. I would suggest giving David Noel a bit more run because that dude can fly. Since you are a small team without Simmons and Villaneuva, try a bit of zone every now and then, can’t be worse than what you are doing now.
2. The Terry Stotts era should probably end. He wasn’t good with Atlanta and he apparently isn’t good with Milwaukee. He is proving the old axiom that you can’t teach a bad coach good tricks (see O’Brien, Jim and River, Doc for more proof).
3. Stop with the white guys. I know you are in Wisconsin, and I know some white guys can play, but Ersan Ilyasova, Dan Gadzuric, and Steve Blake should never be the first 3 guys off of any bench. This isn’t cheese making, NASCAR, or the Iditarod (Wisconsin, Alaska, potato, puhtato). Sign some brothers, seriously. Aren’t the black panthers in Milwaukee? Go recruit there.
New York Knicks:
1. Fire Isiah
2. Fire Isiah
3. Fire Isiah
Charlotte Bobcats:
1. Run every now and again. This might unleash Raymond Felton. With Okafor in the middle grabbing boards and blocking shots, the Bobcats (and I just typed Hornets, as I do every time I write about Charlotte) should be able to control the defensive end and get out on the break. Let Felton push the ball and get some easy points since the half court offense is a bit cluttered.
2. Change your name back to the Hornets. Seriously. By the time I figure out if it’s the Hornets or Bobcats, the highlights are already over and I have no idea what happened. Change your name back so I can focus on your on court performance rather than who you actually are. And I know NO/OKC are the Hornets, but tell them to change their name. I would suggest the Jazz for New Orleans and then Utah could switch to it rightful name, the TeaTotalers, or Caffeine Free.
3. Get Sean May more looks down low. I know injuries have been a part of his lack of playing time, and I know he has never seen a Dunkin Donut he didn’t like, but the guy has got some skills. He has a soft touch and knows how to get open down low (and no, that last sentence wasn’t the beginning of an erotic story so get your heads out of the gutter). Post May up more often and your half court game will improve.
Western Conference
Minnesota Timberwolves:
1. The Mark Blount experiment has to end. I don’t care if you have to play Eddie Griffin at center, Blount is just horrible. He averages fewer rebounds than Eddy Curry and 2.3 turnovers a game. Blount is just terrible with a capital putrid. Just play 4 on 5 if you have to and save those 2 turnovers a game a well as all that sulking.
2. Fire Mchale. As a Celtic fan growing up in Boston in the 1980s, it hurts to have to say this, but Mchale is less competent than Britney Spears’ underwear. He traded for Ricky bleeping Davis for F sake and mortgaged the team years ago for Joe Smith. Sorry Kevin, but you need to go back to Hibbing and ice fish all day rather than ruin your NBA legacy even more.
3. How about a little more Mike James? You wasted all that money on him (once again, nice job Kevin) so why not give him more freedom and let him play 35-40 minutes a night. If he can take any scoring pressure off of Garnett, the whole team will improve.
Portland Trailblazers:
1. The 3-headed center of Pryzbilla, Magloire, and Aldridge has to go. We know Pryzbilla and Magloire suck, so let LaMarcus learn on the job. Your season is over anyway, so let’s see if LaMarcus is the bust AC thought he was going to be.
2. Scour the waiver wire for a veteran PG who knows how to pass. I am not buying the Jarret Jack experiment and if you’ve seen Sergio “Spanish Chocolate Valdez” Rodriguez shoot, you would understand he should only be unleashed when no one is the building. Bring in some crappy older guy who will make the right pass and won’t screw things up, like an Eric Snow type.
3. Does anyone know if Travis Outlaw is any good? I doubt it, which is exactly my point. Give him 30 minutes a game for 5 straight nights and see if he improves. You need to evaluate fully what you have so you know what you are doing when you blow it up to build something better.
Memphis Grizzlies:
1. Get Pau Gasol healthy. When you are a one player team and that player is hurt, you’ve got problems. Pau was all set for more of a breakout year than Britney Spears’ cooch (and yes I know I already used that joke, but have you seen the pics? I am stil speechless. Who does that, and how can I meet her?). He can play, and next year people will know it.
2. Fire Fratello. I don’t think Fratello has done an awful job with the Grizzlies this year since they simply lack talent, but I have never liked his coaching style. Watching a Fratello coached team is as painful and boring as watching that awful Squid and the Whale movie or being subject anything ever written by one of the Bronte sisters (though I hear Charlotte could do some amazing things with a cherry stem).
3. See #1 above.
Friday Night Free NBA Picks:
New York at Detroit -7.5:
I know the Pistons just played a tough road game in Miami but I also know the Knicks are worse than boning a fat chick and getting gonorrhea. Even though NY is on a huge one game winning streak, they have been playing through injuries (first and foremost being what one can only assume is Isiah's brain contusion) and even some line-up changes which don't bode well for them in the long run (like anything does except for firing dodo head Thomas and taking Marbury outside and shooting him to put him out of his misery). Anyway, the point is, take the Pistons and just hope they show up with at least 75% of their intensity.
Sacramento +7 at Dallas:
If Ron Ron plays, this is a closer game than 7. Josh Howard being back definitely has helped the Mavs, as well as Dirk being on fire, but the Mavs are due for a letdown. Bibby plays well in games that matter so take the Kings and hope they can slow it down.
Indiana at Seattle -3:
I bet I could spot you Allen, Lewis, and Ridnour, and you couldn't name the whole Sonics starting 5 (and Sikma and Xavier McDaniel are not acceptable answers). That said, the Pacers are just not that good. I know I keep saying this, and I know they are hanging in there, but Jamaal Tinsley? Really? How is it possible to never improve? Take the Sonics and hope they run the Pacers out of the building.
Orlando -4 at Portland:
What do you get when you take away Zach Randolph's bad attitude, arrest record, and over all sluggishness? You get Dwight Howard. Take the Magic and hope Grant Hill's knee continues to hold up.
Saturday Night Free NBA Picks:
Two close losses last night brings my record to .500 which is neither good nor acceptable unless I am an Eastern Conference team. Tonight we start the rally again.
Philadelphia at New Jersey -5:
As long as AI scores fewer than 45 points, the Nets should dominate. The Nets are playing pretty poorly but are bound to snap out of it any day. Just hope they play any semblance of defense.
Cleveland at Houston -6:
Cleveland has been struggling a bit and the Rockets still have a lot to prove. Plus Ilguaskus has as much chance of stopping Yao as Isiah does of not getting fired. Take the Rockets and hope McGrady goes off.
Milwaukee at Golden State Under 220.5:
Milwaukee played in a high scoring game last night against the Suns so even Terry Stotts will be smart enough to focus on defense. Just one poor scoring quarter and this game is a win so hope Redd has an off shooting night or Don Nelson lets Mike Dunleavy Jr play more than 20 minutes.
Miami +2.5 at Memphis:
Dwyane Wyane Wade likes to win. And has anyone seen Antoine Walker lately? I know he’s there somewhere.
