AC'S NBA FREE PICKS WEEK 15:
I have to keep the column short this week as I am still getting over the contact high from being courtside for the Bobcats-Sixers game on Wednesday night and thus being within twenty feet of Melvin Ely. Ely’s eyes were so glazed over and his play was so lethargic that he made Snoop Dogg look like Richard Simmons. I kept expecting him to go back to the bench and open a bag of Doritos to appease his munchies. With that said, I will answer 10 questions most asked by readers about the NBA and answer each in 3 sentences or less.
Will the Knicks make the playoffs?
I can do this in one word, no. To expand a bit on it though, they still have Isiah as their coach, Eddy Curry still can’t rebound, and if Jamal Crawford is not hot, they have no creators on offense since Stephon Marbury retired about 3 years ago. They’ll still finish below .500 and then get to pick Brandon Wallace, another non-NBA player from South Carolina, with the Bulls’ pick.
Will the Celtics win another game?
Well, since I thought they would win on Friday night, I am going to say yes. It does hurt me deeply that I am now pining for the ML Carr days. The best move for Danny Ainge to make would be to trade himself for Joe Kleine and Ed Pinckney since that is the best trade he has been associated with as a Celtic and it wasn’t even that good.
Will the Nuggets pull it together?
Probably. This is a team I would not want to face in a 5 game series but like I keep saying, it all depends on Camby’s health. Give Camby, Iverson, and Melo 10 games to gel and you will see a huge difference.
Are the Raptors for real?
For now they are. I applauded Colangelo’s strategy of building a Euro team and it is already paying dividends despite the fact that he doesn’t really have any good Euros. Calderon and TJ Ford are distributing the ball like pass first point guards which is a rarity in the NBA as pass first point guards are dying off faster than the ozone layer.
What can the Cavs do to improve themselves?
This one is hard to say because they don’t really have any trading chips. Larry Hughes has been a disappointment for the second year in a row, Ilguaskus is well, he is Ilgauskus, and Drew Gooden is an average at best power forward. They need a shooter and a more athletic inside presence or they need Donyell Marshall to be 15 years younger.
Oden or Durant?
Oden is a beast but I watched the Texas-Texas A&M game and was incredulous at the 5 minute run Durant put on in the second half. The guy was amazing, just spectacular. I still say Oden because I think he will be a more physical Tim Duncan but I would be happy with either (of course Danny Ainge will probably trade the pick for another overrated point guard and an early second round pick to prove how good of a scout he is, just shoot me now).
Can Steve Nash win his 3rd MVP in a row?
Sure he can and he probably will but Dirk is right on his tail and as much as it hurts me to say this, Kobe is actually the most deserving of it. Bryant has altered his game to make the Lakers winners. He could go out and score 60 a night if he wanted to as he is simply the most dominant player in the NBA, unfortunately though, that doesn’t impress hotel workers, which is why Nash will probably win it.
Which team are pundits ignoring that will surprise people in the playoffs?
The Houston Rockets. When Yao comes back, they will challenge the Mavericks and the Suns for the Western Conference title. Yao, McGrady, and a bunch of veteran role players all coming together just in time for the playoffs should be scary for the West, not as scary as partying with the Pacers, but scary nonetheless.
Is there a rookie of the year this year?
Unfortunately there has to be and it looks like Brandon Roy will get it thus making him the worst rookie of the year since Mike Miller in 2001. Everyone knew last year’s draft was thinner than one of those Olsen twins and it has sure proven out. Tyrus Thomas and LaMarcus Aldridge have contributed as much to the NBA this year as Dane Cook has to comedy, which is really not good.
Does anyone care that John Amaechi is gay?
No, I mean I can think of about 900 million things I am more interested in than this (and 899,999,999 of those things involve Taylor Rain, but I digress). About the only interesting thing to come out of this is Shavlik Randolph showing what he learned at prestigious Duke University with this comment “As long as you don’t bring your gayness on me I’m fine…As far as business-wise, I’m sure I could play with him. But I think it would create a little awkwardness in the locker room.” I am sure the Duke lacrosse players are mighty proud of that.
Friday Night Free NBA Picks:
Los Angeles Clippers +1 at Philadelphia:
The Sixers have won 7 out of 11 and the Clippers consistently don't cover the spread so this is a reversion to the mean game. Plus the Clippers are coming off three embarrassing road losses so they have to be ticked off. Watch Elton Brand use Samuel Dalembert as his personal jizz rag and watch Mobley and Cassell drain open jumper after open jumper. Take the Clips and hope they show up and don't miss the game to attend the festivities at Delilah's.
Denver +7 at Indiana:
Maybe Denver wins, maybe they lose, either way they will not lose by more than 7. Carmelo alone will drop in 40 so as long as they get a contribution from one other player, they should be able to stay in striking distance of the marginally decent Pacers. Take the Nuggets and hope the Pacers hit a bar before the game.
New Jersey at Boston +4.5:
Yep, you read it here first. The Celtics are not only going to cover, but I think they will end their 17 game losing streak. Why? Volume (and I have no idea what that means).
Houston at Dallas Under 186.5:
Houston loves to play ugly. This has the feel of a 90-72 win for the Mavericks. And if you feel good, take the over 202 in the Hawks-Suns game as well.
Saturday Night Free NBA Picks:
Denver at Milwaukee Over 209:
This is a bad bet since both teams played last night and Denver hates to cover when I pick the over. That said, these teams love to score so hope Melo drop 40 and the underrated Mo Williams hits 35.
Charlotte at Houston -10: The under is probably a good bet here as well since both teams like scoring like Etan Thomas likes Brendan Haywood . I was at the Sixers-Bobcats game on Wednesday and Charlotte is not just bad, they are Celtics bad. In fact, they owe me for the two hours of my life I wasted watching them. Take the Rockets and hope they play some offense.
New York at Utah -7: The Knicks are playing well and Utah is overrated, that said, it’s still the Knicks. 7 points is a lot to give in this game but eventually Kirilenko is going to go off. Take the Jazz and hope Okur catches fire.
Memphis +7 at New Orleans: It’s either this or the Pistons -7 vs Toronto or Seattle-Sacramento over 207, so which of the three do you feel best about? See my point? Just hope Gasol shows up and the Grizzlies can shoot over 45%.
