AC'S NBA BASKETBALL FREE PICKS WEEK 20:
It’s been an interesting week in the NBA, Kobe has gone for 50 in 4 straight games, the Knicks signed Randolph Morris in a silly desperation move as if throwing more money on crappy players is the solution, and Danny Ainge got fined $30k for sitting next to Kevin Durant’s parents during an NCAA game (and as a Celtic fan, I would be happy if the NBA fined Danny $10MM if it somehow assured us of getting Durant in the draft). Additionally, there has been much debate as to whether Doc Rivers intentionally tanked the Celtics game where they blew an 18 point lead to Charlotte (the team with the third worst record) when Doc refused to put his starters back in the game. If Doc didn’t tank that game then my name is not AC Titticock (hmmm, maybe that’s not the best analogy but work with me here).
With fewer than 15 games to go in the regular season, I thought I’d break out the 3 most improved players from last year in no particular order (I believe in the Chaos theory).
Al Jefferson: Big Al is showing the promise he displayed in his rookie year before injuries and malaise sidelined him last year. Al has doubled his average from last year and is now averaging a double-double with 11 rebounds and 15 points per game, though since the all-star break he is averaging 12 rebounds and 19 points per game. While he still at times play defense as if it were going to give him herpes, he has managed to cut his personal fouls down from 1.5 per 10 minutes to 1 per 10 minutes which has allowed him stay on the court more. Not only that, but his blocked shots have doubled to 1.5 per game which means he now blocks shots like the Philadelphia federal courts block laws banning internet porn (and we should all send District Judge Lowell Reed Jr. a bottle of champagne for this along with a one-year subscription to the www.welivetogether.com). In short, Jefferson is still only 22 so it is not inconceivable that in the next 2-3 years he could become one of the top power forwards in the league.
Andre Igoudala: Igoudala was decent player before the Sixers traded Allen Iverson, but he has improved dramatically since then. He was kind of like a very poor man’s Scottie Pippen, though without the 15 children and the money problems. Igoudala has upped his scoring average from last year to 18.5 per game while also averaging 5 rebounds, 5.5 assists, and 2 steals. He fills out a stat sheet like Bar Refaeli fills out a bikini, which is well and in all the right places. Not only does he put up numbers, but he plays smart and unselfish basketball and along with Andre Miller has the Sixers playing .500 since the AI trade. Could Igoudala become a number 1 type player? I don’t think so, but he definitely could be a second fiddle which is better than a 3rd or 4th option which I thought was his ceiling at the beginning of the year.
Deron “Darren” Williams: Deron was so bad at times last year that he contemplated pretending to be gay just so Jerry Sloan would trade him (ok, I made that up, but you get the point). Deron is now playing like a real point guard to the tune of 17 points and most importantly 9.3 assists per game. He still is a bit slow on defense sometimes, and has yet to take over games on a consistent basis, but he has improved exponentially from last year. The Jazz are 20 games over .500 largely because Williams has played within himself, not tried to force anything, and distributed the ball to the right people. I’m not sure he is a perennial all-star, but he will likely be part of an all-star game or two.
Friday Night NBA Picks
Denver at Toronto Over 206:
Denver is going for 120 tonight so you just need the Raptors to score 87. I am well aware that the Nuggets may be tired due to playing last night in Chicago but that is even more reason not to play defense tonight. Take the over and hope both teams are healthy.
Dallas -8.5 at Boston:
The Mavs almost lost to the Celtics last week in Dallas so it is doubtful they will take this game lightly. Dirk may turn Ryan Gomes, or Brian Scalacrappi, or Al Jefferson, or whomever tries to guard him into his own personal jizz rag. This game is not going to be close but Celtics' fans should be happy Doc tanked the Charlotte game so losing here is just more upside. And ESPN.com putting a picture of Durant in a Celtic uniform with #35 on it is blasphemous. Pour some out for the great Reggie Lewis, will you?
New York at Cleveland Over 186:
Unless LeDong is hurt this should be a relatively high scoring game since neither team enjoys playing defense. Since the Knicks gave Isiah his extension they have played worse than Pakistan in the world cricket tournament (and I have no idea what that means, but apparently Pakistan played poorly enough that their coach was murdered). I love that Isiah got the contract extension and still is going to miss the playoffs with the highest payroll in the NBA. I wish he would show the world the compromising pictures he has of James Dolan. I can only image they feature Mr. Dolan serving as Lucky Pierre for Patrick Ewing and Stephon Marbury.
New Jersey at Orlando -2.5:
I am struggling with this or the Lakers +2.5 or Washington +5.5. The Magic have more talent but the Nets are a better team. Both are fighting for the playoffs so in an essentially pick 'em game, take the home team and the best player on the court in Dwight Howard. Howard should treat Mikki Moore like Nowtizki is going to treat the Celtics.
Saturday Night NBA Picks:
With only 4 games tonight, I can’t pick and choose my favorites so this will be a challenge. However, I still intend on winning you money so I can support the stripper industry since I assume that is where your winnings go.
New Jersey -4.5 at Charlotte:
The thing about Charlotte is that they are really a horrible team. They have two of the five least accurate shooters in the league on their team in Adam Morrison and Raymond Felton who are both shooting a Rojon Rondo-esque 38% from the field. That is pathetic. Add in the injury to Okafor and you have a team with no center and poor shooters which usually means a loss. While the Nets are playing poorly themselves, this should be a good game for them to get back on track. Take the Nets and hope they are not too injured.
Philadelphia at Miami Under 183.5:
These teams like scoring like Alberto Gonzales likes telling the truth. The only thing you have to worry about is if both teams take the night off and therefore no one plays defense. Barring that, this should be a game in the 170s.
Memphis at Utah Over 207.5:
Why not?
Washington at LA Clippers Over 204.5:
I have to admit I have not been able to adequately judge the Clippers this year. I am 5-5 in Clippers games. In this case, just take the over and hope Arenas goes off.
