AC'S NBA BASKETBALL FREE PICKS PLAYOFFS WEEK 7:
This week’s column will be short as AC has level III of the CFA examination on Saturday which means he has no time to write. He has been busy studying finance with the intensity of Rosie O’Donnell studying an ice cream cone (and I am not entirely sure what that means).
For those of you not familiar with the CFA exam here are some sample questions and how they relate to the NBA.
1. What is the Taylor Rule?
A. The rule that says Glenn Taylor, owner of the Timberwolves, is not allowed to surround Kevin Garnett with anyone who resembles a certifiable NBA talent (how else do you explain their lack of quality players to help out Garnett?).
B. If Maurice Taylor is starting for your NBA team, you probably suck.
C. David Stern’s dress code increased the livelihood of many tailors in Big and Tall stores throughout the country.
D. The interest rate can be estimated through the equation R neutral + .5(GDP expected GDP trend) +.5(I target I trend)
2. What is the proper definition of a black box model?
A. An NBA physicians’ type of carrying case
B. Kobe’s “Black Mamba” new brand of shoe
C. An NBA groupie in Black Tail magazine
D. A quantitative model used by managers to select assets
3. Define a “Long Forward”
A. Shawn Marion
B. LeDong’s LeDong
C. Zydrunas Ilgauskus Lithuania’s behemoth (a “long 4 words”, work with me here)
D. A position in a forward contract where you are the counter party who receives the asset/currency/rate at expiration
4. What is a “High Water Mark”
A. Mark Blount (actually, that is just a High Mark)
B. What Donyell Marshall calls his Michael Vick style water bottle
C. The area on the back board where Dwight Howard left a sticker in the dunk contest
D. A level of assets below which a hedge fund will not take their performance fee
5. Explain the Bums problem
A. The plight of a Celtics fan who has to root for all of the bums Danny Ainge has assembled and calls talent.
B. The fact that there are 7 more teams and 3 more roster spots per team in the NBA as compared to the 1980s which dilutes the league by 177 crappy players
C. Zach Randolph’s dilemma as to which hole to use while date raping a woman (and please go to this link http://www.oregonlive.com/pdfs/blazers/zach_memo092006.pdf).
D. The issue with cap-weighted debt benchmarks as they give the highest weight to firms with the most debt and thus are the riskiest.
Saturday 6/02/07 NBA Playoff Picks:
For those of you who missed LeDong go off in game 5 on Thursday night, you missed one of the best performances in recent NBA history. LeDong essentially played one on five for the last 34 minutes of the game (second half and overtime) and won. Now why Detroit didn’t try to zone it up or go box on one or actually have some downlow help defense when LeDong drove to the basket (instead of leaving poor little Tayshaun Prince to get abused by LeDong like an 8 year old at the Neverland Ranch), I’ll never know. Remember, this is LeDong’s world and we’re all just living in it.
Detroit at Cleveland -1.5:
Unfortunately for Detroit, they just aren’t good enough to simply “turn it on.” Mainly because they no longer have “it.” The Cavs had a chance to win games 1 and 2 so could really be up 5-0 at this point. This should be a close game, and were the line Cleveland -5, I would have taken Detroit, but LeDong is not losing tonight, or more to the point, Detroit is not winning. If you feel lucky, tease this with the over 173, and if you feel really lucky, go tease Mike Tyson to his face. Just root for one of Gibson, Hughes, Gooden, or Marshall to break 10 points.
