AC'S NBA 2007-2008 WEEK 2 PICKS:

Check out AC's 2007-2008 NBA Preview

The first week and a half of the NBA season are over and we are already seeing some interesting developments (not as interesting as recent developments such as the rainbow party or subprime mortgages, or but interesting nonetheless). So this week we’ll look at four emerging stories from the beginning of the season. While these are likely to resolve themselves within the few next weeks, they are worth noting.

1. Defeated teams are in vogue: The Wizards, Heat, TerribleWolves ™, Not so SuperSonics, and Warriors are winless so far this season. Five teams without victories at this point in the season is a bit of an anomaly. While the Wolves and Sonics were supposed to be bad, the Heat, Wizards, and Warriors are a bit of a surprise (actually, AC predicted an awful start for Miami, but you all know that). The Heat will be marginally better when Dwyane Wyane Wade comes back, and the Warriors should improve when Mullin and Hardaway get healthy, but the Wizards may join the ranks of Sonics and Wolves as truly bad teams. The Wiz are lacking the impact that Gilbert Arenas had on them last year. He has struggled early in the season which is likely related to his knee surgery or the constant double teams. Given that, it could be a long season in Washington.

2. Will the Boston Celtics lose? The Celtics are 4-0, giving the big three Boston sports teams a 20 game winning streak (9 for the Patriots, 7 for the Red Sox, 4 for the Celtics) so excuse me while I take another sip of my Cristal and down my Beluga and white truffle sandwich. Things are good in AC’s home town sports world and they are only getting better for the Celtics. Garnett has been a force on the court like Fermi in the laboratory or a 300 pound guy in the lavatory after eating twenty tacos, three plates of beans, two pounds of gorgonzola, and a devil dog. The Celtics are not just winning, they are pretty much dominating by shooting 54% from the floor while only allowing their opponents to shoot 39%, leading the league in both categories. We all know their lack of depth will do them in at some point (like maybe tonight since Posey is hurt), but if they can rest Garnett, Allen, and Pierce, they could go all the way. Once again, thank you Kevin McHale.

3. The Clippers are out to a fast start: This is more of an illusion than anything. The Clips are 4-1 but they have only defeated one good team (The Bulls who are struggling) and are winning because Chris Kaman is playing like he has channeled the spirit of Wilt Chamberlain. Kaman is averaging 18 points and 14 rebounds per game which are pretty much double his career averages. Of course it hasn’t hurt that the only team they have played with the makings of a real center is the Pistons and the Pistons won that contest by 24 points. I fully expect Kaman to revert back to his marginal self and thus fully expect the Clippers to fall in the standings. So Clips fans enjoy it while you can.

4. The Bulls are struggling: The key to the Bulls has been finding someone to step up and make shots. They have a deep team but are made up of passive role players. I thought Deng was ready be that alpha dog based on his breakout playoff performance last year but so far he has done less to back up this belief than Britney Spears has done for the women’s rights movement (though she has done a bunch for the teenage boys’ johnson movement). The Bulls have too much talent to flounder as badly as they are and if they continue to lose, Scott Skiles is likely to tear someone’s head off (literally, not figuratively), so I fully expect them to turn this around and be a top three Eastern Conference team.

Friday Night Picks:

First of all I am completely embarrassed, mortified, and disappointed by last weekend's showing against the spread. In the 5 years AC has been putting out free picks against the spread, he has never had a defeated weekend. I now know how AROD feels in the playoffs or how Britney Spears' therapist feels, just utter failure. I understand it may take some time to win back your trust, so feel free to limp back in tonight, it won't hurt my feelings.

Toronto -2 at Philadelphia:

I know, my downfall last week was picking too many road teams to cover. I also know the Raptors are playing more like the Craptors (come on, work with me here), but they need a win tonight. Plus the Sixers have no one to stop Chris Bosh. He is too quick and too smart for Dalembert and too fast and good for Reggie Evans. This game will be close but Toronto should prevail. Just hope their line-up change of bringing Bargnani off the bench works.

Orlando at New York Over 201.5:

Quick quiz, name 2 things the Knicks and Magic have in common? 1. They hate playing defense and 2. They hate playing defense. You get the point, right? Enjoy the Dwight Howard-Eddy Curry/Zach Randolph match-up though.

Phoenix -8 at Miami:

The only way this game is close is if Shawn Marion got such an outrageous venereal disease last night while out partying in South Beach that it infects the entire team and the Suns are forced to play with only Eric Piatkowski and Marcus Banks (and even then the Suns will probably win by 4). Just hope the Suns try.

Minnesota at LA Lakers -10:

Who is going to stop Kobe? Let me know when you find out.

Saturday Night Picks:

Toronto at Chicago -6.5:

As noted above, the Bulls are about to break out. The Raptors have been struggling and barely pulled out a victory in Philadelphia last night. There is a 30% chance Toronto wins this game and a 70% chance they get blown out, so take the Bulls and root for that 70% probability.

Memphis at Utah Over 218:

I hate taking the over on 218, hate it, but these teams have been filling it up (insert your own dirty joke here). The Jazz are the most underrated team in the league and Deron Williams has them running at full speed. Add in that both teams played last night and therefore are likely to play zero defense tonight and you get a high scoring game. Teasing this with the Jazz -10 would be a good bet as well.

Denver -1.5 at Indiana:

This is probably the stupidest pick of the night but I am not yet buying Indiana and Denver is better than they have played. I know this is the second of back to back road games for the Nuggets, and I know the Nuggets have less heart than the Tin Man, but they should pull this out. Just root for Melo and AI to shoot more than 45% from the floor.

Phoenix at Orlando Over 207:

This almost seems like a sucker line so as always, buyer beware.
