AC'S NBA 2007-2008 WEEK 15 PICKS:

The NBA is really heating up as we approach the trade deadline. Houston and Utah have won nine out of ten (though Utah must be devastated by hometown boy and likely closet child molester Mitt Romney dropping out of the presidential race to undoubtedly help this country in other ways, and I would suggest crawling into a hole and staying there as way #1, but that’s just me), the Pistons have refound their mojo and have won seven straight, and even the Knicks have rallied by winning one out of their last ten, a truly remarkable feat for an Isiah Thomas led team. The big news of the week though was the Shaq trade which I will try to break down for you even though it leaves me almost as confused as I am about mayonnaise.

The Miami Heat trade Shaquille O’Neal, Shaquille O’Neal’s bum hip, and Shaquille O’Neal’s doctored birth certificate to the Phoenix Suns for Shawn Marion and the awful Marcus “we really signed this guy to a five year $21MM contract? Really?” Banks:

The Heat make out very well here, almost too well. They give up a declining, expensive asset, for a young expensive asset and have to spend some cash on Marcus Banks to do it. While this makes Miami the second awful team, along with the TerribleWolves™, filled with Ex-Celtics (Ricky Davis, Mark Blount, and Marcus Banks), adding Shawn Marion to Dwyane Wade’s overall game should only help the struggling Heat even if they will be held back by the Chris Wallace ex-Celtic factor. If the Heat don’t sign Marion, this is a meaningless trade for them, however, if they can keep Marion around and get help with their lottery pick this year, they will have a formidable three man squad to build around. Marion can flat out play.

As for the Suns, everyone, including your boy AC, is kind of scratching their heads about this one. If you accept the rumors that Marion was killing clubhouse chemistry, and you conclude that the Suns were not going to win it all with their current team, then I guess you have to make a bold move. If what you have isn’t good enough, then do your best to trade out of it, and that is what Steve Kerr did. I give him kudos for having the cojones to make this trade, but he better hope it works.

The main problem is that there is no telling what the Suns are actually getting. Shaq is not just ossifying at a rapid pace, but he hasn’t played enough this year to actually know what he can still contribute. If healthy, all he needs to do is clog up the middle, grab defensive boards, and start the break with outlet passes. If not healthy, I guess he needs to tickle Amare’s balls in the locker room to make sure Amare is happy (which I guess was his problem with Marion, no ball tickling). I think there is a more than 50% chance this move rejuvenates Shaq. I mean imagine how miserable you would be if you had to play with Ricky Davis and Mark Blount? So you can’t blame Shaq for his lack of effort so far this year.

Sure Shaq may have trouble keeping up with the fast paced Suns but Duncan and Boozer and David West and Andrew Bynum and Pau Gasol are going to have trouble keeping up with a Shaq/Amare front line. Amare is now going to feast on opposing power forwards like Rosie O’Donnell on a basket of chicken wings while Shaq will work the body of opposing centers like a heavy weight fighter.

I don’t love this trade for the Suns, but it has the potential for love and I guess that is all for which Suns fans can ask. If Shaq can’t stay healthy and his hip continues to degenerate like our society has (and if you don’t think our society has degenerated simply watch my new favorite video or read the past five years of dick jokes in this column), then the Suns have royally screwed up. Could the Suns have won they title had they kept Marion? I think so. Can they win it now with Shaq? I have no idea. So in short, enjoy the soup.

Friday Night Picks:

LA Lakers at Orlando Under 212.5:

The Lakers are the team to beat in the West once Bynum comes back. Until then, they will have some inconsistencies like a Judd Apatow movie or Kentucky Fried Chicken. This should be a close game but there is a small probability the Lakers blow the Magic out. Either way, with the Lakers still learning how to play with Pau, their offense may not be fully polished. Take the under and root for Dwight Howard to shoot 50% from the line.

Cleveland +3.5 at Atlanta:

I will buy into the Atlanta hype when they win a playoff game, or go over .500 for the year. With Cleveland playing a stinker of a game last night against the Rockets, expect them to come out ready to play. LeDong is going to go for 40+ tonight so as long as the rest of the Cavs don’t all play like Larry Hughes, they should keep this one close.

San Antonio -7.5 at New York:

This is such a trap game that I should not be betting it but the Knicks don’t just suck, they suck as if they were run by Isiah Thomas (oh wait, they are, see?). The Spurs are still hobbling around with injuries and have begun to work newly acquired Damon Stoudamire into the rotation so they may not be at 100%, but still, they are playing the Knicks. The fact that this line isn’t twelve points worries me, as it means I am missing something (maybe Duncan is out or Ginobili is going to play with one hand tied behind his back or Bruce Bowen has leprosy) but I still refuse to take the Knicks in any game unless they are getting more than ten points. I have asked this question for years, but if someone can tell me how Isiah has a job, I would love to know.

Portland +11 at Detroit:

I’m not thrilled about taking three road teams but the Blazers come to play every night. The Pistons should win but Portland is not going to lose by double digits. My boy Travis Outlaw is going to drop about 15 points off the bench to keep this close and Brandon Roy is going to takeover when it counts. The Pistons are playing very well right now due to RaWeed Wallace refinding his game, but the Blazers are not to be taken lightly. Take the points and enjoy the show.

Saturday Night Picks:

Memphis at New Orleans Over 203.5:

Further proving my theory that two out of Memphis, Charlotte, and New Orleans play each other every night, we have this Whorenets and Grizzlies game. The Whorenets should blow them out but we don’t give 14 points here at Wagercom.com lightly. Therefore, we’re taking the over as the Whorenets love to score (sort of) and the Grizzlies hate playing defense. If Rudy Gay can drop 25 points and Mike Miller can catch fire, this game will be a high scoring affair so take the over and hope Memphis doesn’t fall out of it too early.

Atlanta at Houston Under 184.5:

I still don’t know what to make of the Hawks other than that they are about half as good as some people think. They have three point guards who aren’t very good and seventeen small forwards who are at best league average. The Rockets should dominate this game as Al Horford comes up to Yao Ming’s shoulder so Yao should be able to shoot over him all night. The best play would be to tease this with Houston minus 8 but taking the under should do just fine. Just root for Houston to play defense for at least three quarters.

Sacramento +7.5 at Golden Shower State:

Shhhhhhhhhhh, don’t let anyone else know the Kings are good.

New York at Milwaukee -6:

Milwaukee is not just bad, they are New York Knicks bad. Lucky for them they get to play the Knicks. There is as much of a chance of Eddy Curry getting up for a game in Milwaukee as there is of me banging Jessica Simpson so the Knicks will likely be playing four on five for half of the game. Take the Bucks, pretend this game never happened, and count your cash tomorrow.
