AC'S NBA 2007-2008 PLAYOFFS ROUND 2 FREE NBA PICKS & COLUMN:
As one of the few NBA fans in the world, it hurts me to write today’s column, but as we near the end of the second round of the playoffs, it is clear the NBA needs to make some changes. I know Commissioner Stern reads this weekly diatribe religiously (we know he likes money in the NBA so why wouldn’t he want to make more money on the NBA by betting AC’s picks, especially as AC has a 68% winning % in the playoffs), so I can only hope he heeds the below advice.
1. The officiating is atrocious. This has been the elephant in the room for way too long of a time. Marc Cuban has been harping on this for years (at least when he is not trying to perfect the Moe Howard look) and today, the day after the refs gave Cleveland a Game 6 victory, we had the news that proud Villanova graduate Tim Donaghy bet on over 100 games during his tenure as an NBA referee. How this story is being swept under the proverbial rug (or tucked under the butt cheeks for you trannies out there) is beyond me.
What is clear is that the refs are influenced by the home crowd, I even called this out yesterday as my reason for picking the Cavs in Game 6 and it was 95% of the reason the Cavs beat the Celtics. There was the ridiculous charge called on Paul Pierce in the 4th quarter as well as the obvious goaltend not called for Ray Allen. Plus LeDong shot more free throws than the entire Celtics team. Not only is the officiating biased for the home team and superstars, but it is biased against young players. Glen Big Baby Davis was called for every single touch foul last night and yet when he would go up for a shot and get his arm almost hacked off, there would be no call. The only way Davis was going to get a call was if Ben Wallace actually raped him under the basket, and even then it was probably a 50-50 chance.
It is at the point now where it is difficult for me to watch NBA games because of this. The rules should apply equally to all players and all teams. The officiating has become a joke (and not a funny joke like why was six afraid of seven?). David Stern has to do something to fix this even if it will make games less predictable (potentially making it harder for us all to win free money) and will cause shorter playoff series and thus fewer games for the league to make money.
2. What do Kendrick Perkins, Tim Duncan, LeDong James, and RaWeed Wallace have in common (besides never having been in my kitchen)? None of them have ever committed a foul, well at least according to them. There is so much whining in the game that it is becoming unwatchable. Part of this is the inconsistency of the refs (see point 1 above) and part of it is that there are no consequences for whining. Two years ago the NBA tried to crack down on this by being more aggressive with technical foul calls, and it worked, but that has apparently stopped. Every time Tim Duncan whines he should be forced to have part of his vagina waxed, that is the only alternative solution of which I can think.
3. The opening introductions have just gone too far. Look, I like getting pumped up for NBA games as much as anyone. If you want to turn the arena lights out, play some rap music, and yell the players names, I am fine with that. However, when you put a three minute video on the jumbotron featuring Wally Szczerbiak hitting threes to blaring hip hop music and then release smoke and fire works, you have gone too far. There should be a one minute limit on player introductions, a ban on indoor smoke displays, and no NBA team should be allowed to show highlight videos featuring players shooting mid range jump shots.
4. The cheerleaders wear too much clothing. If you are going to do something, do it right. Either the cheerleaders where thong bikinis or the league gets rid of them completely. No half-assing this important game function. Also, lap dances should be given to select members of the crowd during time outs, this is non-negotiable.
5. The playoff scheduling is atrocious. How is there no game on Saturday night? Really, how does this happen? And why is there a three day break between Game 6 and Game 7 of the New Orleans-San Antonio series? The Celtics-Cavs play two games during the break in the Whorenets-Spurs series. This is ridiculous. I haven’t seen scheduling this bad since ABC tried to bury Diff’rent Strokes on Sunday nights. There should be one day in between games unless traveling between the coasts is involved.
6. There are too many commercials. The average regular season NBA game is around two hours and ten minutes. Last night the Celtics-Cavs game was two hours and forty-five minutes while the Jazz-Lakers game was two hours and thirty minutes. So the playoffs are adding about a half hour of extra commercials. If the commercials were for Rick’s Cabaret that would be one thing but they are largely for something called the Bill Engvall show (and I don’t know who Bill Engvall is but if I ever see him I will punch him in the nuts) and another show called House of Payne (and the not the Jump Around House of Pain). I would really rather have that half hour to brush up on my Esperanto, find the hidden dimensions relevant to string theory, or rub one out to Corn Fed Booty. Can we please just cut the commercials and show the game?
Commissioner Stern, I know you are reading this, so how about making some changes?
FRIDAY 5/16/08 FREE NBA PLAYOFF PICKS:
Boston at Cleveland Under 179:
The easy pick here would be Cleveland -2.5 since the Celtics play like rape victims on the road. However, there is a small chance that Boston found their mojo again after a strong second half in Game 5. Plus the Cavs will be part of the itty bitty titty committee as they will be without their Boobie as Boobie Gibson will be out with a separated shoulder. Given that, this should be a low scoring affair. While I expect the Cavs to prevail since getting within seven feet of LeDong will likely cause the refs to blow fouls (as opposed to just blowing each other, oh! Hickory dickory dock…), the under should be safe unless this game goes to OT (7% probability). Most of all, I wish I could bet that Violet Palmer will be reffing the game tonight, it seems like a no brainer.
LA Lakers +3.5 at Utah:
If you can tease this with over 212.5 then by all means do it, heck if you want just take the over and be happy. However, there are some times when an NBA maven such as myself has to man up and not take mamby pamby over/under picks. There are times when good analysts have to sac up and make some tough calls. This is one of those times. I know Utah is a dominant home team. I know Kobe has a sore back. I know road teams are getting no love. However, most of all I know Utah is a weak team mentally. I think they choke here in Game 6 so the 3.5 LA is getting is all gravy. Watch out for Pau.
