AC'S NBA 2008-2009 NBA FREE PICKS WEEK 7:
It is a strange time in which we now live. The Governor of Illinois, who received his undergraduate degree from one of the finest institutions in the world but one that may have a bit of an ethics problem (just ask Kenneth “Don’t call me Dion” Lee or Dennis “Fumble on the goal line” Lundy) tried to sell Barack Obama’s Senate seat, the US government is going to bail out the auto industry, but then they're not, but then they are, and Britney Spears was hot, and then she wasn’t, and now she is again. There is no telling what is going to happen in this world except that Rosie O’Donnell will never be funny and Bar Rafeli will never not be hot.
With all of the uncertainty, I promised last week to answer the three biggest questions in Western Conference, so without further ado (and as always, I have no idea what “ado” is but am glad there will be no further of it)…
Will Jason Richardson be able bring some life to the Phoenix Suns?
Yes yes, and yes. The Suns have been treading water and losing (which I think is drowning, but I am no oceanographer) for the better part of 2 months and they needed to do something. They have a strange mix of old players (Steve Nash), really old players (Grant Hill), and ossifying players (Shaq). With the aging trio they roll out Amare Stoudamire who can’t seem to get himself interested in defense or passing. The Suns lack athleticism and that is exactly what they got in Jason Richardson. Sure they have Leandro Barbosa who is an athlete, but he doesn’t have the size or explosion that Jason Richardson does (and if ever I am in porn, I hope I am lauded for my size and explosion, but that is a different story). Richardson is a perfect fit for this Suns team and should provide some of the spark they have been missing without Shawn Marion. This takes Phoenix from a sure first round playoff exit to just frisky enough that you probably don’t want to play them in May or June. That said, their still not good enough to beat the Lakers.
Can anyone in the West beat the Lakers?
Absolutely. As we saw in the Finals last year, the Lakers aren’t a very mentally tough team. They are prone to sulking and finger pointing when things go wrong. Plus they still have Lamar Odom who fades in big games like a 20 year old bumper sticker on the back of a Ford Pinto. The Lakers are very deep, which helps in the regular season grind, but when it is basically 5 on 5 for the playoffs, they can be tested. Andrew Bynum is going to be very good, but he is still somewhat immature and completely unproven in the playoffs. The starting 5 of the Jazz can definitely hang with the Lakers, as can the old wise Spurs. Do I expect the Lakers to lose in the Western Conference playoffs? No. But is there more than a 25% chance? Yes. Teams just need to go at them and get Kobe to be selfish Kobe.
Is Houston finally going to figure it out?
Well, they may already have figured it out as they have the third best record in the West. That said, the mix of players is all wrong and Rafer Alston is still running the point. Alston is adequate, but he doesn’t really bring anything to the table. If the Rockets had a dynamic point guard who could push the ball and play defense, I would like their chances a lot better. Their biggest problem though is chemistry. McGrady, Artest, and Yao have played so few games together due to injury (and those injuries will likely persist throughout the year) that they don’t know how to best work with each other. They have a ton of talent, but it takes awhile to come together as a team and I just don’t see that happening. It took the Celtics 3-4 months last year to start getting it and this Rockets team will not all be healthy for 3-4 months. They can certainly cause some havoc in the playoffs, but I would be shorting them after the regular season.
FRIDAY NIGHT FREE NBA PICKS
New Orleans at Boston -6.5:
The Celtics are 21-1 and they relish beating good teams. They love taking out competition more than Joanie loves Chachi and more than Patrick Ewing loves whores. I know they played in DC last night but the Celtics walloped the Wizards so badly that the starters played very few minutes. Rajon Rondo is going to have to step up to the challenge here by guarding Chris Paul and I think his teammates are going to really push him to take over the game. They want Rondo to be an all-star and this is his game to legitimize that claim. Take the Celtics, give Posey a standing ovation, and don’t get nervous when it is a close game into the fourth quarter.
San Antonio -7 at Minnesota:
The TerribleWolves® are due for a win but at Wagercom.com we have a strict policy of always taking the Spurs and giving under 10 points to the TerribleWolves® until Tim Duncan retires or Al “The Big Lazy” Jefferson grows a brain.
Orlando at Phoenix +1:
I have no idea if Jason Richardson is going to play for the Suns tonight, but I do know I would be selling the Magic all day if I could. Yes, Dwight Howard is very good and yes Hedo Turkoglu is underrated as well as uglier than Kathy Griffin covered in corn shit, but the Magic are going nowhere with Jameer Nelson at the point and Keith Bogans starting at the 2. Amare is going to want to take it to Howard tonight and Nelson can’t stop Nash from getting Amare the ball wherever he wants. Take the Suns, hope Richardson plays, and if not, hope Amare comes to play.
Atlanta +2.5 at Miami:
I really want to take the under 199 on Chicago-Memphis but I just can’t bring myself to wager on a game with two such awful teams (and yes the Bulls are awful, despite their record). So we’re left with Atlanta who is coming off of a tough loss to San Antonio on Wednesday and just dropped all three games of their Texas road trip. They better take advantage of tonight because they have Cleveland coming up next. Given that, the Hawks should be able to pester Dwyane Wyane Wade just enough with shot blockers on the inside that someone else on Miami will have to beat them and if any of you can name someone else on Miami who the Hawks should be worried about, you get a free cookie (or at least get the point). Take the Hawks and enjoy the Al Horford show (or more specifically, hope Al Horford shows up).
SATURDAY FREE NBA PICKS
AC went 4-0 last night so hopefully you bet your severance package with AC and are now cruising in a Bentley on some 24s. Tonight we’ll try to double up again so you can buy the company that just laid you off.
Washington at Philadelphia -5.5:
It’s not that the Sixers have been playing poorly, it’s that they have been playing awfully poorly. The Brand signing has not worked out yet and Mo Cheeks has just figured out that starting Thaddeus Young, who does nothing but shoot, is probably not the way to build a winner. The best way to break out of a slump though is to play a crappy team at home, and Philly gets that honor tonight with the Wiz in town. I fully expect a half way full Comcast Center to be marginally raucous and cheer the Sixers on to a double digit victory. They are due, it is that simple.
Orlando at Utah -4.5:
My first trap game of the weekend. The Magic lost a tough game in Phoenix last night while the Jazz were all snuggled in their beds not drinking caffeine while their multiple wives fellated them. In other words, Utah should be well rested while the Magic should be tired, plus there is that whole thing about the Jazz simply being better than the Magic. Deron “Darrin” Williams has struggled a bit since returning so he must be salivating about getting to go up against Jameer Nelson. It’s not clear who is going to stop Dwight Howard (maybe they’ll throw Ostertag on him, and yes I am kidding) but the Jazz should be able to run Orlando out of the building. I don’t love taking this game because it is too obvious of a pick, so buyer beware.
Cleveland at Atlanta Under 191:
While I would like to tease this with Atlanta getting 5.5 as well, taking the under should be fine. These teams both like playing defense and they both played last night. You should get a sloppy, disjointed game which sounds a lot like AC’s sex life and I’m not entirely sure what that means. Take the under and root for LeDong to sleep through the first half.
New Jersey at Chicago Under 205.5:
See above except take out both teams like playing defense, add 14 points, and add both teams suck.
