AC'S NBA 2008-2009 NBA FREE PICKS WEEK 15:

The Stupid Bowl is over, the Lakers beat the Celtics in their final meeting of the year, and apparently Jessica Simpson is fat. Given those three occurrences, most of you must be feeling like there is nothing to look forward to anymore, but stay calm, the NBA all-star game is next week, the playoffs are only 3 months away, and the trade deadline is sneaking up on us. There will be a flurry of NBA action over the next few months as teams wrangle for playoff position and seeding so do not dismay that there is no football until next year, in fact, just may (which must be the opposite of dismay, right?), that there are five more months of NBA action.

Here are the top stories from the NBA this week:

Oden vs. Durant:

These two played against each other for the first time since the draft two years ago in a match almost no one was eagerly anticipating. If you haven’t been paying attention, Kevin Durant has been tearing up NBA small forwards like a young Nipsey Russell tore up the young Hollywood starlets in the 1970s. Durant is averaging 30 points, 8 rebounds, and 4 assists over the last month. That is just incredible. Meanwhile, Greg Oden has followed up a strong five game performance by wilting like Chamberlain’s big dipper after a Saturday night.

Their match-up Friday night was more of the same as Durant led the Thunder to a 9 point upset win of the Blazers while scoring 31 points. Oden managed just 4 points and 3 rebounds in a losing cause. There are three takeaways from this: 1. Durant is a beast. 2. As I have said over the last month, Oklahoma City is the sleeper team for next year. I just wish they stop waking people up this year. 3. Oden is still a work in progress, but we here at wagercom.com still believe in him.

Lakers beat the Celtics in Boston:

While the Lakers won, this game was more like the Celtics lost. Boston missed open shots, committed unforced turnovers, and had the wrong players on the court at the wrong times of the game. Why Doc Rivers let Leon Powe and Eddie House waste away on the bench while Glen Davis and Kendrick Perkins were using the floor as their personal port-a-potties is beyond me. House could have spread the floor in overtime and Powe wouldn’t have shot a Big Babyesque 1 for 8 from the floor. The play to win the game in overtime was also poorly drawn up as a pick and roll with Ray Allen and Big Baby is just not going to confuse the Lakers who have been playing long enough to know just to stick on Ray Allen.

One has to give credit to the Lakers who won without Bynum and only 3 referees calling the game in their favor (and by only 3, I mean all 3, but I digress. Unless you can tell me that Ray Allen was not pushed on his last second shot in OT, Paul pierce was not hacked by Kobe on his last second possession in the 4th, and KG actually committed his 5th and 6th fouls). Lamar Odom hit two clutch free throws which happens about as often as Halley’s comet passes the earth or Rod Blagojevich tells the truth and Kobe nailed three consecutive three pointers with Paul Pierce right in his eye. Overall a good win for the Lakers and a loss that shined a giant spotlight on the Celtics core problems of not having any big guys on the bench and not having a back-up point guard.

LeDong goes for a triple-double with 54 points against the Knicks:

Ok, so they took away a rebound a few days later to no longer make it a tripe-double, but still, what an amazing game. A 50 point triple-double hasn’t happened since Kareem Abdul-Jabbar did it in 1975. Since then the Red Sox have won two world series, cell phones were launched, and the internet was born spawning such wonderful cultural icons such as www.youporn.com and www.wagercom.com. Thirty three years is a long time between events so Witness the year of LeDong.

FRIDAY NIGHT FREE NBA PICKS

Atlanta +2 at Charlotte:

Joe Johnson is supposed to be back and Gerald Wallace isn’t. Add in Al Horford’s return to mitigate the under the radar improved Emeka Ofafor and Atlanta is primed not only to cover, but to win outright. Take the Hawks and root for Josh Smith to push the tempo.

Boston at New York Under 207.5:

KG may or may not play. The Celtics may or may not be up for this game. And New York may or may not still be an NBA team. Of course the key point in all of this is that with KG, the Knicks will be shut down and without KG, the Celtics will struggle to score with Glen Davis stepping into the KG role. So take the under and tease it with the Celtics -6.5 as they have to be determined not to let last night’s loss to the Lakers start another slide.

Utah -2.5 at Sacramento:

The Kings are retiring Chris Webber’s number tonight and with any luck they’ll force their current team into retirement as well. The Kings are just not a good team and being not a good team trumps being a poor road team like the Jazz. The things Deron “Darren” Williams is going to do to Beno Udrih would make even Larry Flynt blush. I know in the past we have rode this Utah Jazz team on the road to no avail, but tonight there will be avail. In fact that is our new slogan for this weekend: Wagercom.com: Where avail happens.

LA Clippers +4.5 at Memphis:

Baron Davis is back. Marcus Camby is healthy. Zach Randolph is back and has not yet raped anyone today (so I am told, but don’t ask who is telling me). Eric Gordon can play defense (you hear that OJ Mayo?). This Clips team can win. Plus I refuse to ever believe in a Chris “The Destroyer of Teams” Wallace team. Memphis is going for their third win in a row so they should be just confident enough to overlook the never dangerous Clippers. Take the Clips, close your eyes, and tomorrow when you are cashing in your money you can tell your friends where the bad man touched you.

SATURDAY FREE NBA PICKS

Detroit -3.5 at Milwaukee:

The Pistons are not a very good team right now. They haven’t figured out how to play AI with Richard Hamilton. They haven’t figured out that Jason Maxiell needs to get more minutes. Most of all, they haven’t figured out how to get RaWeed Wallace to become 5 years younger and 10 times more interested. I would never take the Pistons on the road right now and give points unless they were playing a Milwaukee Bucks team minus three of Milwaukee’s starters. Michael Redd, Andrew Bogut, and Luke Ridnour are all out for the Bucks. The fact that this line is not 8 points worries me because it seems illogical that the Pistons could lose to this Bucks team and usually when things are illogical, something else is occurring. While this reeks of a trap game, we’re still taking the Pistons and hoping to step around the trap since we see it coming. So keep your eyes open, don’t turn around, and root for Rodney Stuckey to go off.

Miami at Philadelphia over 193:

Teasing this with Miami +5 is really the right thing to do here. Now that Elton Brand is done for the year, the Sixers can get back to what they do best, which is running and scoring transition baskets. Miami should be happy enough to let Philly dictate the pace (and yes I said dick, sort of) and turn this game into a track meet. A s long as Dwyane Wyane Wade can get just a bit of scoring help, this is an easy over. So root for Michael Beasley to finally step it up and root for DeQuan cook to get hot from 3.

Denver at New Jersey +2.5:

The Nuggets may be playing the best basketball in the NBA right now and they are finally healthy. That said, it is tough to win on the road on back-to-back nights, even if one of those games was against the Wizards. I don’t particularly like the Nets, and by particularly, I mean “at all,” but Brook Lopez has been steadily improving. It’s almost time for her debutante ball. Anyway, take the Nets here and hope Vince Carter wants to play.

Chicago at Dallas Under 209:

As much as I want to take the Clippers +8 in Atlanta, there is a rule about betting on the Clips on consecutive nights. If that rule did not exist, we would be all over LA since they are finally healthy and when healthy, their team is actually pretty decent. Just don’t go spreading that around as it is our inefficiency in this market and we don’t want it to get withered away. So instead we are left with the Bulls-Mavs who are two disorganized and inconsistent teams. Neither one has a particular style of play or a particular strength and when that is the case anything can happen but it is not likely to happen all that well. The point is, this game will be more disjointed than the plot in a Paulie Shore movie, so take the under and don’t try to figure it out.
