AC'S NBA 2008-2009 NBA FREE PICKS WEEK 16:

ALL-STAR WEEKEND FREE NBA PICKS

It’s All-Star Weekend and this year we are lucky enough to have All-Star Saturday night fall on Valentine’s Day which is kind of like having your cake and not being able to eat it too. NBA fans with significant others are now forced to either TIVO the festivities, not go out with their lady (or man) friends and thus likely give up their Valentine’s Day blumpkin, or convince their lady (or man) friend that watching large black men dunk the ball is romantic. The choice is yours.

Without games to pick this weekend, and being that most of my readers are degenerate gamblers (while all of my readers are degenerates), I will handicap the All-Star festivities.

HORSE contest:

I really like that they are doing this but they couldn’t have picked more boring participants. Kevin Durant, Joe Johnson, and OJ Mayo have the charisma of a grapefruit. Seriously. It’s like having the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue and only including only girls with A cups (not that there is anything wrong with that, but you get the point). This competition should have 5 players, they should be guys who like to talk trash, four of them should all be current all-stars, and one of them should be a retired Hall of Famer. Hopefully they fix this for next year.

As far as the competition, OJ Mayo blows so he’s going out first and Joe Johnson may bore himself to sleep so that leaves Kevin Durant who never saw a shot he didn’t like (or couldn’t hit) to win it all. Durant wants to show the league that he is for real and this is another stepping stone.

Winner: Kevin Durant

Shooting Stars Competition:

It’s not 100% clear to me what this is but every year an NBA player, a WNBA player, and a retired NBA player get into some kind of shooting contest where they have to hit shots from six separate areas on the floor. This year San Antonio (Duncan, Robinson, some WNBA chick), Phoenix (Barbosa, Majerle, some WNBA chick), Detroit (Afflalo, Lame-beer, some WNBA chick), and the LA Lakers (Fisher, Michael Cooper, some WNBA chick) are in the competition.

With Phoenix being the home team and Thunder Dan Majerle wanting to show the young ladies his range, take the Suns squad.

Winner: Phoenix

Skills Competition:

Tony Parker, Mo Williams, Devin Harris, and Derrick Rose are competing in this passing/dribbling obstacle course competition. Since we know Mo Williams can’t pass, he clearly won’t win and since we know Devin Harris plays too out of control, he clearly won’t win either. So we are left with Tony Parker and Derrick Rose. Rose might be a little nervous even though he has the best body control of the group and probably is the best passer. Therefore we’re going with the veteran Tony Parker in what is All-Star weekend’s least premier event. And is there a word for least premier? Is it “anti-premier”? Is it just “mier”? Is it “postmier”? Or is it just “shittiest”

Winner: Tony Parker

3-Point Shootout:

Everyone loves the 3-point shootout. It is consistently the best competition of the weekend but the NBA screwed up this year and did not invite Eddie House who deserves some recognition. I am thinking of boycotting this as a result but then Eddie would want me watch it.

Somehow instead of Eddie House the NBA picked Mike Bibby who is not a true 3-point shooter and Daequan Cook who about three people have ever heard of and that includes his teammates (AC is one of the three though as Daequan is on his fantasy team and lighting it up from three).

Anyway, the six participants are Cook, Bibby, Roger Mason, Rashard Lewis, Danny Granger, and two time defending champion Jason Kapono. Bibby, Mason, Granger, and Cook are obviously not going to win this. Cook will be nervous, Bibby can’t shoot, and Granger and Mason shoot jump shots which just doesn’t work in this competition. So that leaves Rashard Lewis and Jason Kapono. I’ve learned three things in life: 1. Don’t spit into the wind. 2. Never get into a land war in Asia. 3. Never pick against the white guy in a 3-point shootout. So there you go. Kapono is not only a nasty shooter and defending champion, but he is white.

Winner: Jason Kapono

Slam Dunk Competition:

First of all, the only way this competition will be good this year is if Gerald “The Scarecrow” Green comes out of the crowd in his street clothes, strips them off to reveal his uniform WWE style, and just starts dunking. This has to happen. Barring that, the dunkers this year are just not that inspired.

The contestants are Dwight Howard, Nate Robinson, J.R. Smith, and Rudy Fernandez. J.R. Smith has as much chance of winning this as I do of boning Bar Refaeli or winning a national sports writing award. This contest is about charisma, originality, and who the fans like. Smith is fourth out of four in all of those categories. As for Rudy Fernandez, he shouldn’t even be in this contest. The fans voted between Fernandez, Joe Alexander, and Russell Westbrook for the 4th spot and Fernandez won the international vote to get in. Westbrook would have brought a ton of excitement to this event but instead we get to see Rudy try to take off from the foul line and miss and wind up doing an old man reverse dunk (just trust me on this one, it’s going to happen). I don’t go to Spain and try to bull fight so Rudy Fernandez should not come to the US and try to dunk. It’s just not right, like John Hodgman in Battlestar Galactica (really? That is the best casting you could do?).

So that leaves us with the diminutive Nate Robinson vs. the minutive (or is it prominutive?) Dwight Howard. The problem with this match-up is we’ve already seen Nate Robinson dunk. We get it. He’s short, he can jump, so to quote the great Derrick Coleman “whoop-de-dam-doo.” There are only so many dunks a short guy can do and we’ve probably seen them all already. While Robinson has more charisma than Dwyane Wyane Wade has STDs, we’ve seen his act before.

That leaves us with Dwight Howard who put together one of the greatest dunk performances in the history of this event last year. He is creative, he is athletic, and the crowd loves him. I worry that he shot his load last year and won’t be able to follow it up this year, but he is the logical choice. Always go with the champion, even if the performance won’t live up to the billing.

Winner: Dwight Howard

All-Star Game:

The West is favored by 4.5 because the game is in Phoenix I assume. With Chris Bosh being replaced by Mo Williams in the East, the East only has two true big men in Dwight Howard and Kevin Garnett. As we all know, the All-Star game is a little man’s game so the lack of big men should help the East. Factor in LeDong hates to lose and Paul Pierce is going to want to show that he deserves as much recognition as Kobe and LeDong, being that he is the reigning Finals MVP, and the East should not just cover but should win outright. LeDong, Wade, and Pierce are just too much for the West to handle. And when Paul Pierce is the surprise MVP, remember you heard it here first.

Winner: The East to cover the spread
