AC'S NBA 2008-2009 NBA FREE PICKS PLAYOFFS WEEK 6:

AC was all set to write a biting and insightful commentary on this year’s finifugal playoffs and the myriad story lines such as Mickael Pietrus’ inspired play, Dwight Howard’s awful offense, the Lakers’ seeming lack of coherence and effort, Andrew Bynum’s disappearance, and Chauncey Billups’ team changing chemistry, but then LeDong hit that shot. If you don’t know what shot I am talking about, perhaps you spent last night on the planet Melmac washing Gordon Shumway’s unshorn and shaggy taint.

With one second left in Game Two and the Cavs down by two points, LeDong James caught an inbounds pass about two feet behind the three point line at the top of the key and lofted up a rainmaking three pointer with Hedo Turkoglu running at him that went in at the buzzer. This shot was almost on par with Magic’s hook shot that beat the Celtics in Game 4 of the 1987 Finals and Jordan’s jumper against Utah where he shoved Bryon Russell out of the way in Game 6 of the 1998 Finals (the difference being those two shots happened in the Finals). Having the best player in the world step up and hit a huge basket has to be a boon for the on the rise again NBA which has been setting cable ratings records for the league during this year’s playoffs. LeDong’s shot was so clutch that if I were him I would never wear pants again. I would have a wardrobe solely of shirts.

The best part about the game was that the refs seemingly called it fair. In the last minute the refs actually called LeDong for a travel which is unheard of because: 1. The game was in Cleveland. 2. LeDong took only 5 steps and not the 7 it usually takes for him to get whistled. 3. The league has to want LeDong in the Finals.

Not only did the refs call that travel, but on the play before it they didn’t call a foul when LeDong got his shot blocked. I honestly don’t know what happened to these referees. In the last minute they actually acted like they knew the rules of the game and were shunning the NBA law that says you have to give all the calls to superstars, especially when they are playing at home in the playoffs. I haven’t seen that much blatant disregard for an unwritten rule since Nipsey Russell banged contestants on the Match Game in the 1970s.

So where does all of this leave the Cleveland-Orlando series right now? Cleveland has blown two huge leads in this series while the Magic have shown to be more resilient than a cock roach after a nuclear holocaust or Pauly Shore. The Magic just don’t go away thanks to their three point shooting and their all-glue team duo of Courtney Lee and Mickael Pietrus. Those two guys do everything your non-superstars should do, everything. While Orlando now has the home court advantage and has shown they are not afraid of the Cavs, this is still Cleveland’s series to lose. Sure they needed a miracle shot to avoid going down two games to none while losing both games at home, but the fact is they got it. They still have LeDong and that is all you need in the NBA.

    Orlando at Cleveland -9:

What did we learn from game 1:

    1. LeDong James is good at basketball.

    2. When the Magic hit their 3 pointers, they are tough to beat. Orlando shot 9 for 20 from behind the three point arc which is about what Ben Wallace shots from the free throw line.

    3. Mickael Pietrus is not just French for “Courtney Lee’s in foul trouble” it’s also an anagram for “Leukemic Rapist” which I believe would imply the Cavs all suffer from Leukemia because Pietrus straight up stuck it to them in ways they clearly did not want.

    4. The Cavs non-LeDong starters are mediocre at best which is about 30 times nicer than one can say about their bench. Cleveland’s bench contributed 5 points in 41 minutes. They were so bad I believe Cavs fans were pining for Mikki Moore and Stephon Marbury.

    5. Dwight Howard is a monster and the Cavs are going to have to do a much better job on the boards if they want to prove to be the dominant team everyone thinks they are.

Anyway, I’m still sticking with the Cavs here because the Magic are due for a poor shooting night, Cleveland is going to come out pissed, and the refs are going to call 25 fouls for LeDong and thus completely kill any flow to this game. Mostly though, Cleveland is not going to give up more than 100 points again so while I am intrigued by the under, I don’t think Orlando will be able to stop LeDong and thus prefer to give the points. Cleveland was up 15 at the half before their sphincters tightened up, let’s hope those sphincters remain loose for all 48 minutes tonight.

LA Lakers at Denver Over 211.5:

I know, taking the over on 211.5 points in a playoff game is similar to punching Mike Tyson in the nuts and then running into a crowd for cover. Sure you might get away with it, but why would you try? Well even though AC has lost 3 games in a row, he is going for this high level of difficulty over tonight for four reasons.

    1. Denver plays out of their minds at home. They score in Colorado like they’re Burt Reynolds at the 1973 Miss America pageant.

    2. The Lakers hate playing defense, hate it. This LA team may be softer than Jeannie Buss’s basketballs, though only Phil Jackson truly knows.

    3. Kobe hates Colorado. The only place he has ever heard no is in a hotel room in Colorado and no makes Kobe mad enough to ass rape someone (No really, it does). So tonight, the Nuggets will get to play the ass in Kobe Bryant’s Colorado revenge.

    4. The two teams have yet to combine for over 210 points in a game and that is bound to change since they averaged a combined 211.2 per game in the regular season.

AC does not love the over here due to the triple lindy-esque degree of difficulty caused by the low margin of error (one bad quarter or a Denver blow out screws this up), but he is going to take it anyway. So take the over, hope Kobe goes off, and enjoy the no defense.
