NFL Playoffs Week 1 Free Picks & Column
Wild Card Time

Chad Pennington (NYJ) @ Tom Brady (NE) NE -9
In the playoffs the games often come down to coaching and preparation. Although it seems ridiculous, I am not sure that organizations give their best efforts week in and week out. I am duly impressed with Eric Mangini and yet I cannot pick the J-E-T-S, Jets, Jets, Jets because I have too much respect for Hoody Belichick. That Hoody knows how to win. One could also go down the skill positions one by one and see that the Patriots are at an advantage at almost every position. Brady trumps Chad, Maroney/Dillon trump Barlow/Washington/Houston… This could get boring. The spread is large, but the Jets have had emotional (and sloppy) wins while the Pats have played carefully and well. Look for the Pats to shut out the Jets. Take the Pats and give the points.

Americas Team (Dal) @ Canada’s Team (Sea) Dallas +3
Similar to the argument above, the Dallas Coach, Tuna, is just better than Holmgren. Yes, they have both had success, but I also believe that the Cowboys are more powerful at the skill positions (save QB). Alexander isn’t 100% (and may never be again) and Hassleback is still looking to find his groove (though a gimpy Hassleback may be better than a healthy Romo, who needs more time to learn the pro game). The running tandem of Julius Jones and Marion Barber III are arguably the best duo in the game and TO and Terry Glenn are better than the ewoks that Seattle rolls out at receiver. The defense of Dallas (though maligned rightfully so of late) is powerful and will be duly prepared for this game. Look for Dallas to fly to Seattle and leave with a win. Take the Boys.
Hermie Edwards (KC) @ Tony Dumby (Indy) Indy -7
The Colts have been slumping. Peyton Manning is a convicted pedophile (and a gay one at that). The Chefs have been playing their guts out and are riding a two game winning streak. But in the end, I cannot back Herm because he is black. Just kidding, I can’t support him because he is a loser. Herm is a 500 coach in the regular season (how he keeps getting hired is beyond me) but in the playoffs, he is 2-3. I hate the Colts, I do, but the Chefs will quit. The Chefs won’t be prepared and they will be swarmed under by the incredibly potent Indy offense. Sure, LJ will run for many yards, but once the Colts are up 14, it is hard to justify running the ball. Sorry Hermie, maybe next year. Take the Colts and give the points.

Eli (NYG.) @ Jeffe Garcia (Philly) Philly -7
This one was the toughest to pick. I have been a supporter of the Giants through the year. I love their talent. But they continually disappoint. They core of Manning, Burress, Barber and Shockey is formidable and certainly far superior to Garcia, Brown, Westbrook and Smith. But in the end, I have to go with the superior coach, Andy ‘down syndrome’ Reid and the streaking Eagles (and they are at home). If Reid has his guys ready to go and they jump out to an early lead, this could get ugly for the G-men. Let’s hope it does. Take the Eagles and give the points.
