NFL Playoffs Week 2 Free Picks & Column
Divisional Time
Peyton (Ind.) @ Steve McNair (Bal) Balt -4
Wow I think the only person happier than Jiggy last week at the Colts beating the Chefs was Hermie Edwards. Did you see those clips? It looked like Herm had just won the superbowl. Herm, you are supposed to have your team win. I know that you and Tony are old compatriots and that you are part of a small fraternity of black head coaches in the NFL. But that doesn’t mean that you roll over and let the other guy win. I suspect that Hermie had also bet on the Colts.
Anyway, back to the game at hand. After checking the weather report and finding out that it is going to be cold and potentially rainy, I have to go with the defensive-minded Ravens. The Ravens aren’t good and this will be their last game of the season (either SD or NE would crush them) but I think they’ll have the Colts number. Once Peyton gets pressured (and the Ravens will bring pressure) he gets flustered and then begins to come apart. Couple that with the fact that they have to make the trip to Baltimore and that Baltimore has had an extra week of preparation, healing and rest and one has to take the Ravens. Take the birds and give the points.
Lucky Garcia (Phi.) @ Drew Brees (NO) Philly +5
Whoosh. That is the sound that players say they hear when Reggie Bush runs by. Apocryphal or not, Reggie is fast. But one exciting rookie running back doesn’t make a great team. I am afraid that I have never really ‘bought in’ to the Saints being a tough team and that has cost me money this season. The Saints have a great offense and they have exciting players. But the story is on the other side of the field. The Eagles have figured out how to win. Sure they only squeaked past the NYG, but their defense looked spot on and Lucky Garcia fits perfectly into the offense. I think the Eagles win straight away. Take these birds too and the points.
The Spaceman (Sea.) @ The Superbowl Shuffle (Chi.) Bears -9
This one gave me agita all week. After watching Dallas give away their game against the Seachickens time and again it became very clear to me that the Seahawks shouldn’t be in the play offs. Yeah, they won the NFC last year (whoop dee effin doo) but they aren’t as good this year. They have a tired old back, a wobbly QB and a patchwork receiving corps. Now on the other side you have the most dominant (arguably) defense in the NFL. And you have another factor, the weather. Soldier field when it is cold and snowy is the place where passing offenses go to die and the Sea Chickens have not been running well. I am all over the Bears and I am not afraid to give the nine. You shouldn’t be either. (I think the Bears defense will outscore the Seahawks.)
Newly Single Tom Brady (NE) @ Newly Starting, Phil Rivers(SD) SD -5
This is the game that we have all been waiting for. The team that wins this one is going to win the superbowl and I think the team that is going to win is the San Diego Chargers. First there is the old, home field, week of rest and preparation story (which makes sense and shouldn’t be overlooked yet great coaches seem to manage through this). And then there is the great story of contrast between the two QBs one is threepeating, over achieving late round pick while the other is the heir apparent, taken early in the first round and finally getting his chance to play. And then there is the coaching story, the wizard with the bad fashion sense versus the overly conservative aging one. I love this game. I know that Hoody will get his team prepared and I know that they will be sharp but in the end, I think that the Chargers just have too much talent and team cohesiveness. The Chargers are all world on both sides of the ball. Their defense is healthy and together for the first time in a long time (look out Brady) and LT, PR and AG are all ready to rock and roll. I hope that the coaching staff of the Bolts figures out a way to stop Brady (and I bet they will) and then, the Bolts will roll. Jiggy has loved SD from the get go and this is their coronation. Take the Bolts and give the points.
