8/25/03 Preseason Top Ten Team Picks

It’s that time of year again, the summer heat is baking the country, baseball is thankfully beginning to wind down, as if it was ever wound up, NFL teams are halfway through their ten game preseason, and most importantly the NCAA college football season is just a heartbeat away. It’s that most wonderful time of the year when all teams and their fans can indulge in mindless optimism. Every die hard golden gopher, vandal, or bearcat can look at a roster and football schedule and think, “ya know the ball bounces right once or twice and we’re in a BCS bowl game.” While of course that won’t really happen it never hurts to dream. So let’s get down to it. Here are my NCAA college football top 10 teams in the preseason; the best part is every one of them is fatally flawed. So without further adieu…

1. Oklahoma- The defense is just scary. Lots of big fast guys that want to hurt people.

Nough said… But of course they did get torched by OSU…two years in a row…

Hmmm.

The offense well… they should have a good line perhaps even a great line, but behind that line you’ve got a QB whose had his knees amputated, a solid but not world beating backfield, and nothing super special in the receivers department. Side note: OU might be better off down the road if backup QB Rawls takes over for the oft and likely to be injured White, particularly early in the season. Overall great D, if they stay healthy, offense could surprise. No shoe-in for the Sugar though.

2. Miami It’s great to lose everybody and still be #2. Dorsey gone, McGahee gone,

Johnson gone, McDougle gone, Joseph gone. Four first rounders and a Heisman trophy candidate quarterback go bye-bye and guess what Miami has as good a shot as anybody to play for all the marbles. Their lines should be as good as anyone in the country, Frank Gore could well be as good as McGahee was, and some say better. So the real question marks are receiver and quarterback, but the talent appears to be there as well it just has to deliver. One thing though this team should have won it all last year. They can bitch and moan about the PI call all they want. The game should never have come down to one call. They were about 10x more talented than the buckeyes. That debacle kinda reminds me of the Lambs losing to the Patriots in the Super Bowl. Side note: TE Kellen Winslow Jr. has finally picked his own nickname. He is now the self proclaimed, “chosen one,” Two thoughts 1) He’s Jewish? I had no idea he was one of my people. 2) What an idiot! Chosen for what exactly? With the exception of Deion “primetime” Sanders, it’s really best to leave the naming process to other people.

3. Auburn This one will bite me in the ass I have a feeling, but… On paper a great team.

More quality tailbacks than anyone could ever need. Possibly two legit all-

Americans. Cadillac and Brown alone would be heaven for a coach, Auburn

Though gets to go two deeper. Campbell seems to be an okay QB. I’m not sure he’ll win them any games, but he shouldn’t lose them for them either. Their defensive front seven are as good as anybody. The back four though are a serious question mark. Ask me again after their opener against USC, and I’ll tell ya if they still belong in the top three.

Da Rest

4. VA Tech – Kevin Jones and a good defense they always have got a shot. Need to rebound from a crappy year.

5. K-State- They’ll have at least one loss to a good team, to balance out the wins they got against their usual weak out of conference games. Heisman trophy might be headed out here.

6. Texas- Too bad Mack Brown can’t coach a lick. Talented as Miami, coached by John Cooper part II. They will never win a national title under him.

7. Michigan- Yawn…Good team as always.... John Navarre will also never win you a national title. Look for UT vs. UM in a good bowl game with no hope of a national title.

8. FSU- You heard me FSU. I’m not ready to hop off this bandwagon yet. Rix can’t be as bad as he has been…Can he? After wrapping up all of their legal issues just in time for the season, FSU might actually be good. The defense should be a lot better. The real question is the o-line. If they play well FSU could have a great year, but it’s a big if.

9. OSU- The buckeyes will not rumble and stumble to another title. 6 games without Clarett guarantee it. They get pinned with at least two losses one of which will be the badgers.

10. Tennessee- Don’t count out the Vols if they find some more defense and a go-to WR, they could be a player for a major bowl.
