9/10/03 Week 4 Picks
Sigh. Obviously I had a tough week last week with my college football picks; sub .500 handicapping is nothing to be proud of. Now I could sit here and blame myself, but that would be just silly. Clearly I am not at fault. If we’re going to cast blame at someone I recommend we look skyward. That’s right it’s God’s fault. Not buying it? Explain NC State forgetting to play their first string last Saturday. Bureaucratic error? Perhaps but I doubt it definitely seems more like an act of God. What about OU not covering by a meaningless F-ing field goal., Or the WSU cougars coming back against ND, not to win mind you, just to make sure they screwed the spread by a couple of points. Proving that while the good lord may be a fan of the Irish clearly he does not put his money where his mouth is. That of course brings up an interesting philosophical question: If God did gamble which currency would he use and why? A question someone should hit the Pope with next time he comes over for wings and beer. I will also be penning my apology letter to Middle Tennessee State this week. In retrospect if there is a more lovely part of Tennessee than the middle I ain’t seen it. Go Blue Raiders Go! I can’t talk Auburn, I feel like a girl who took back a guy who cheated on her, and sure he swore it would never happen again, and a week later guess what happens. I need some time apart from Auburn. I do hope that we can work it out but only time will tell. Enough about the past let’s get started losing… I mean winning games. This weeks college football picks against the spread…
Hawaii +21 ½ over USC
Man USC looked terrible against BYU. When BYU’ s storied D-line chews up your O-line it’s time to tell your O-line that they need to start going to class because in a couple of years they’re going be selling insurance to NFL players not playing with them. Hawaii can score lots of points and I don’t think USC can. This game should be similar to last week USC may well win but it will closer then it should be.
UCLA -10 ½ over Illinois
UCLA lost starting QB Matt Moore, but Drew Olson is a capable backup. Illinois will turn the ball over with regularity in Rose Bowl. Dorrell gets his first career win (I know I said that last week too, at least they covered.)
Michigan -10 over Notre Dame
I don’t think much of Irish QB Carlyle Holliday and I think even less of their O-line. WSU is not a good team this year and they should have waxed ND after getting up early, instead they gave the game away after halftime. Although betting on John Navarre is like playing Russian roulette with only one empty chamber.
Minnesota -20 over Ohio
Minnesota runs the ball well and racks up points against weak opponents. There is also no way in hell you’ll actually have to watch the game. Gopher Power!
Pitt -31 over Ball St.
Pitt mauled Kent State and isn’t exactly facing a buzz saw in Ball State. Also I am becoming convinced that no one in Indiana knows how to play football. Check out IU sometime.
Wake Forest -1 over Purdue
Hey I told you all along Wake Forest isn’t just Tim Duncan’s Alma Mater, they play good football. Yeah that’s what I said. They beat BC and NC State they are a damn good team. You heard it here first Oh yeah Purdue Sucks (another Indiana school that can’t play football).
Auburn -12 over Vanderbilt
In protest I am picking the Tigers until they win and cover. Should they not do so before the end of this year I’ll …I’ll … Well I’ll d something pretty violent I’ll tell ya that. If Tuberville takes a vow of silence I’ll guarantee an Auburn victory. He is one coach who should be seen not heard. Oh yes and Vandy still sucks, the more things change…
FSU -24 over Georgia Tech
I hate to say I told you so, but…. actually there is nothing I enjoy more than saying that. FSU is a good team with the best TB in the nation (that includes the moron at Ohio State). They should keep getting better. Twenty four points is a lot, but FSU traditionally is good at putting teams away, and mercilessly taunting them at the same time.
Nebraska -10 over PSU
How god awful is Penn State. In their bowl game last year Auburn beat them. That’s right Auburn. Nebraska is not back to the glory days but they are better than Temple and BC which means Joe Pa should get the cliché ready for the media i.e. “Well shoot they’re a great young team and heck they just got the best today.”
Middle Tenn. State +14 over Clemson
My boys the Blue Raiders will roll at Clemson. They played Georgia pretty tough, and will be another team in line to bid baby Bowden au revoir. I said the Dawgs would beat up on them and I was wrong now they’re my boys for life (or until they cost me money, whichever comes first)
Oregon -11 ½ over Arizona
John “Dead Man Walking” Mackovich has Oregon in for the first stop on his Pac-Ten farewell tour. Oregon in tribute to the great coach Mack will put up 57 points to celebrate the soon to be unemployed coaches age. Trivia question Mackovich vs Tuberville? Answer: Based on the mathematical principal that two negatives must equal a positive, there would a war, lighting storm, or Armageddon hence sparing the population of having to waste their time watching the worst coaches in the business.
Good Luck and remember if you’re listening to my advice you really need to take stock of your own life. That is all.
